'My agent said': Sergio Aguero says a Premier League club actually tried to sign him before Man City

Sergio Aguero has revealed that there was another Premier League club that tried to sign him before he joined Manchester City.

Considering how much Sergio Aguero achieved in a Manchester City shirt, it is impossible to imagine him having potentially signed for another English club.

But at Atletico Madrid, the Argentine legend was one of the hottest strikers in world football.

In his three seasons at the Metropolitano Stadium, Aguero scored 21, 19 and 27 goals respectively in all competitions.

The Manchester City icon was hitting such impressive numbers in Atletico Madrid teams before Diego Simeone’s appointment in 2011.

As a result, it was no surprise that teams around Europe were queuing up at Aguero’s door to secure his services.

Luckily enough for Manchester City, they struck up a deal to sign one of the most coveted strikers in Europe in 2011.

Aguero’s signing lived up to the hype from his debut season, where he famously scored a last-gasp winner to clinch the title against Queens Park Rangers.

But even more impressively, the Buenos Aires-born frontman, who was 23 years old at the time scored 23 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League in his first season at the club.

Aguero bagged 30 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

It was onwards and upwards for the retired goalscorer, who went on to get a statue at the Etihad Stadium in tribute to his unforgettable spell at City.

During an interview with The Club, Sergio Aguero revealed that Chelsea tried to sign him.

Aguero joked, “I scored many goals against Chelsea.”

Aguero turned back the clocks to his brace against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2009, after which the club’s interest in securing his services were piqued.

“Yeah, two goals against Chelsea. I started in the second half, I did two goals. One was a volley and the other was a free-kick.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. After that game, two months after, my agent said to me, ‘Chelsea is interested.’ So, I had just three years at Atletico Madrid but me, I love the Premier League, to play there but Chelsea never showed interest after that.

“After that, interest but then my agent said, ‘Okay, maybe not.’

Sergio Aguero disclosed that when Frank Lampard joined Manchester City, the Blues legend informed him that he told Chelsea to sign him.

“I spoke about that with Frank Lampard because Lampard played in Man City and then he said when we played against him, he told the staff at Chelsea to sign Aguero.”

Sergio Aguero would be happy he did not join Chelsea

In our view, Sergio Aguero would be satisfied that he ended up signing for Manchester City instead of Chelsea.

At Stamford Bridge as well, Aguero would undoubtedly have won several trophies.

But at the Etihad Stadium, the five-time Premier League winner made history at a club that were far from being a top team.

Aguero would likely be proud of the fact that he was one of the protagonists in City’s rise as a dominant force in English football.
