An Albanian appeals court on Tuesday upheld a two-year prison sentence for an elected mayor of the country’s Greek minority, Dhionisios Alfred Beleris, after his lawyers attempted to overturn what they describe as a politically motivated incarceration. The 51-year-old Himare mayor-elect was arrested last year after being charged for allegedly buying votes. Beleris was never sworn into the council position as he was placed under house arrest and subsequently sentenced. He has denied the charges. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of the world’s most extreme wildfires, a new study shows. Analysing 21 years of NASA satellite data, researchers found that severe burns more than doubled in frequency between 2003 and 2023. The intensity of these fires also increased 2.3-fold, with the six most extreme years happening from 2017 onwards. In Europe, Portugal is among the countries worst affected in recent years. The thirteen crew members of the yacht Persefoni were charged with a felony and ordered to enter a plea on Wednesday by the investigating judge. If found guilty they could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years as well as a large fine. They were arrested last Wednesday for allegedly launching fireworks that caused a fire to break out in a pine forest on the island. Authorities in Athens on Wednesday announced the closure of the Acropolis - Greece's most visited tourist site - for over five hours due to heat wave temperatures that prompted many schools to close. The UNESCO-listed archaeological site in the Greek capital which drew nearly 4 million visitors last year was closed from midday till 5:00 pm local time as the high temperature climbed over 39 degrees Celsius.
