New York (AFP) - Dealing with occasionally rowdy guests as a hotel manager and keeping an orderly workplace as a dishwasher while in college appear to have uniquely prepared the judge handling Donald Trump's trial. In the first two days, Judge Juan Merchan has kept proceedings moving at a clip, overseeing the selection of a third of the jury and alternates despite suggestions that screening could take weeks, while putting former president Trump in his place when he appeared to step out of line. Merchan has said he wants opening arguments to start as soon as Monday, prompting the Republican pre...

New York (AFP) - Donald Trump said Monday that he has a "real problem" with the judge handling his New York criminal case -- and that he should be on the campaign trail instead of in court. "We're not going to be given a fair trial," Trump told reporters outside the Manhattan courtroom after jury selection ended for the day in his "hush money" trial, one of four separate criminal cases he faces. Trump also criticized Judge Juan Merchan for rejecting his request that he be allowed to attend a Supreme Court hearing next week. Trump argues that as a former president he should be immune from crimi...

Washington (AFP) - A man wanted for the murder of a Maryland judge who ruled against him in a child custody case has been found dead, officials said Thursday. The body of Pedro Argote, 49, was found in a wooded area near where his vehicle was located last week, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The sheriff's office did not provide a cause of death. Law enforcement had been searching for Argote since Judge Andrew Wilkinson, 52, was shot dead in the driveway outside his home in Hagerstown, Maryland, on October 19. Just hours earlier, Wilkinson had presided at a divorce ...

Washington (AFP) - A vast search was underway on Friday for a man suspected of shooting dead a judge in the eastern US state of Maryland who ruled against him just hours earlier in a child custody case, officials said. Judge Andrew Wilkinson, 52, was shot in the driveway outside his home in Hagerstown, Maryland, on Thursday evening, Washington County Sheriff Brian Albert said. "This was a targeted attack," Albert said at a press conference. The sheriff said local, state and federal law enforcement authorities were searching for Pedro Argote, 49, of Frederick, Maryland, in connection with the s...

Los Angeles (AFP) - A California judge charged with drunkenly killing his wife with a gun he kept in an ankle holster allegedly texted a colleague after the shooting to say "I won't be in tomorrow. I will be in custody," a court heard Tuesday. Judge Jeffrey Ferguson had dozens of guns and 26,000 rounds of ammunition at his house when officers arrived to find his wife dead from a gunshot wound to the chest, the court was told. Prosecutors said Ferguson, 72, who sits on Orange County Superior Court, smelled strongly of alcohol when he was arrested and told police, "Well, I guess I'm done for a w...

Washington (AFP) - The judge who is to preside over possibly the most significant trial in American history -- USA vs Donald Trump -- has already handed down some of the stiffest sentences in cases involving participants in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan also has a legal history with Trump -- she ruled against him in a November 2021 case, notably declaring that "presidents are not kings." The 61-year-old Chutkan has been assigned to oversee the historic trial of the 45th US president on charges that he conspired to overturn the results of th...

Washington (AFP) - The US Senate on Tuesday confirmed the 100th federal judge appointed by President Joe Biden, as he works to dilute the impact his predecessor Donald Trump had on the courts. Under the US Constitution, presidents appoint Supreme Court justices and federal judges for life, with Congress' upper chamber confirming or rejecting the nominee. In theory, judges are politically impartial, but their previous legal decisions and the president who appointed them generally shed some light on their beliefs and leanings. Gina Mendez-Miro, a 49-year-old lawyer, became the latest judge confi...

Washington (AFP) - A jury was selected Monday for the trial of former Donald Trump advisor Steve Bannon for defying a subpoena to testify before lawmakers investigating the attack on the US Capitol. Bannon, who led Trump's successful 2016 presidential election campaign, was among dozens of people called by a congressional committee to testify about the 2021 storming of Congress by Trump supporters. The 68-year-old refused the summons and was indicted on two charges of contempt of Congress. A 22-person jury was selected on Monday to hear the case. The panel will be cut down to 12 jurors and two...

Washington (AFP) - Former Donald Trump advisor Steve Bannon must stand trial for contempt next week, a judge ruled Monday, despite his belated U-turn in agreeing to testify before the committee investigating the US Capitol riot. "I see no reason for extending this case any longer," said Judge Carl Nichols, according to US media reports. Bannon, the 68-year-old co-founder of far-right media site Breitbart News who led Trump's successful 2016 election campaign, was among dozens of people called to testify on last year's insurrection aimed at shutting down Congress over then-president Trump's bas...
