Several people were killed when thousands of protesters stormed Kenya’s parliament Tuesday to protest against government tax proposals. Part of the building was burned, sending lawmakers fleeing and drawing fire from police amid unrest that the president vowed to quash. It was the most direct assault on the government in decades. At least three bodies were seen outside the complex where police had opened fire, and medical workers reported five people killed. Clashes spread to other cities. There was no immediate word on arrests. “Today’s events mark a critical turning point on how we respond t...

The US Surgeon General declared that gun violence in the country constitutes a "public health crisis" and issued an advisory calling attention to the "urgent" issue. Firearms have been the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the US, according to the advisory, over motor vehicles, poisoning and cancer. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has called on the US to ban automatic rifles and regulate the industry, but the US Congress typically recoils at gun control measures. Some US state legislatures, however, have enacted or may consider some of the surgeon general's proposals. Murthy ...

Muhammad took a hydrant wrench to Shin's house and, finding him outside, began repeatedly swinging the wrench at his head, leaving Shin with broken arms and a concussion. The attack stopped only after a neighbor pulled a handgun and confronted him. Shin has filed a lawsuit against the department, but Muhammad has been allowed to remain on the job, and Sh...

The shooting of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is an example of the more serious acts of political violence in parts of the European Union. It was the first attempt on the life of a European head of state since 2003, and reflects a growing polarisation across the continent.
