Amarillo (United States) (AFP) - Abortion is illegal statewide in Texas, but residents in the city of Amarillo want to go a step further -- banning even the use of the city's roads by people seeking the procedure elsewhere. Dismissed as grandstanding and extremist by critics, such laws are legally dubious and almost impossible to enforce -- yet that hasn't stopped their proliferation across conservative locales in the United States. The highways passing through Amarillo connect Republican-led Texas with New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas, where abortion is still legal. "We're experiencing all the...

Before Ohio voters amended their constitution last year to protect abortion rights, the state’s attorney general, an anti-abortion Republican, said that doing so would upend at least 10 state laws limiting abortions. But those laws remain a hurdle and straightforward access to abortions has yet to resume, said Bethany Lewis, executive director of the Preterm abortion clinic in Cleveland. “Legally, what actually happened in practice was not much,” she said. Today, most of those laws limiting abortions — including a 24-hour waiting period and a 20-week abortion ban — continue to govern Ohio heal...

Houston (AFP) - The Texas Supreme Court unanimously rejected on Friday a challenge to the state's strict abortion laws brought by women who had serious pregnancy complications but were denied abortions. The case was filed last year on behalf of two dozen women who were denied abortions even though they had in some cases life-threatening medical issues with their pregnancies. The suit was the first in the nation brought on behalf of women denied abortions since the US Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to the procedure in June 2022. The Center for Reproductive Rights argued in th...

California has some of the nation's toughest restrictions on the interstate practice of medicine. With very limited exceptions, the state requires that doctors offering any sort of treatment, care, or consultation to California patients be licensed in California. While the rest of the country is changing regulations to accommodate telemedicine, California forbids out-of-state specialists from doing even remote follow-up appointments or consultations with their California patients. To lighten this regulatory load, Gov. Gavin Newsom yesterday signed into law Senate Bill 233. It will let out-of-s...

Washington (AFP) - Republican lawmakers in the southern US state of Louisiana gave final approval Thursday to a bill that would criminalize possession of abortion pills without a prescription. The legislation, passed 29-7 by the state senate and 64-29 in the state house, is the first in the country to classify the drugs as controlled and dangerous substances. It is expected to be signed by Republican Governor Jeff Landry. The bill comes as abortion rights are being hotly debated ahead of November's presidential election pitting Democratic incumbent Joe Biden against likely Republican challenge...

General skepticism toward qualified immunity, the legal doctrine that makes it difficult to sue rights-violating state and local government officials, has over the years brought together weird coalitions, to put it mildly, and challenged some of the stereotypes about traditional partisan fault lines. A federal judge this week floated one such alliance: If you hated Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court precedent that enshrined abortion as a constitutional right, then you should really disdain qualified immunity. Stay with me here. That connection came nestled in an opinion concerning a police detecti...

On KFF Health News’ “What the Health?,” chief Washington correspondent Julie Rovner sat down with Atul Grover of the Association of American Medical Colleges to talk about its recent analysis showing that graduating medical students are avoiding training in states with abortion bans and major restrictions. Among those who applied for residencies this year, that was true not only for aspiring OB-GYNs and others who regularly treat pregnant patients, but for all specialties. Fourteen states, primarily in the Midwest and South, have banned nearly all abortions. The new analysis by the AAMC found ...

Faroe Islands lawmakers have narrowly failed to reform the Danish territory's strict abortion law. The Danish news agency Ritzau reported that the Faroese Parliament was deadlocked at 15 votes for and 15 against a bill legalizing abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy. Under the current law, which dates back to 1956, abortions are only permitted in the Faroe Islands if the health of the mother or the foetus is seriously at risk, in cases of rape or incest, or if the mother is deemed unfit to care for a child. Lawmaker Hervør Palsdottir from the left-wing Tjódveldi party called the decision ...
