European Union environment ministers on Monday approved a much fought-over conservation law intended to restore habitats to their natural condition. The purpose of the Nature Restoration Law is to regrow forests, re-wet moors and return rivers to their natural, free-flowing states. The law has proven controversial, particularly because of fears of heavy restrictions on farmers. Ministers for 20 of the EU's 27 member states voted in favour, representing 66% of the population. A decision by EU member states was held up until now because not enough national ministers were prepared to back it, des...

She said the law struck a balance between all interests. EU member states had demonstrated responsibility for nature in Europe, she noted. "An intact nature is the web that supports us all," Lemke said. The ...

Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler is facing legal action from the country's governing Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) for backing the European Union's new Nature Restoration Law. ÖVP general secretary Christian Stocker said that a charge of abuse of office would be laid against Gewessler, a member of Austria's Greens, arguing that she had deliberately infringed constitutional law by voting for the EU law. The ÖVP is the larger party in a coalition with the Greens in Austria. "Leonore Gewessler is placing herself above the constitution, because she is unable to act in line with the ...

The EU's grain imports from Moscow have risen since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Figures from the Eurostat statistics office show that imports grew from under €120 million ($130 million) in 2020 and €290 million in 2021 to €440 million in 2023. Ex...

Throughput of the Ukrainian Black Sea ports was also higher than at the time of the grain agreement. Ukraine's maritime corridor has so far enabled 1,600 ship transits and the export of 45 million tons of cargo. The majority of this, around 30 million tons,...
