GAINESVILLE, Fla. Washington (AFP) - A 50-year-old man was executed by lethal injection Thursday in the southern US state of Alabama for the murders of an elderly couple, prison officials said. Jamie Ray Mills was the sixth Death Row inmate executed in the United States this year. Mills was sentenced to death in 2007 for murdering Floyd Hill, 87, and Vera Hill, 72, during a robbery. They were killed with a machete, tire iron and hammer. His wife, JoAnn Mills, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for her involvement in the 2004 murders and testified against her husband. The Alabama Department of Correc...

Abortion opponents have maneuvered in courthouses for years to end access to reproductive health care. The election-year ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court allowing enforcement of a law from 1864 banning nearly all abortions startled Republican politicians, some of whom quickly turned to social media to denounce it. The court decision was yet ...

Companies have increasingly offered generous fertility benefits to attract and keep top-notch workers. Now, the federal government is getting in on the act. Starting this year, federal employees can choose plans that cover several fertility services, including up to $25,000 annually for in vitro fertilization procedures and up to three artificial insemination cycles each year. With about 2.1 million civilian employees, the federal government is the nation’s largest employer. Now, just as businesses of every stripe prioritize fertility benefits, in vitro fertilization — a procedure in use for m...

Over the past several years, the members of Alabama have weathered their fair share of health challenges and other logistical difficulties, keeping them from the stage. So they never take the opportunity to tour for granted — and they’re getting that chance once again in 2024. On Thursday (March 21), the group announced a lineup of dates billed as the 2024 Roll On II North American Tour, a reprisal of their 2023 tour of the same name. It’s a nod to the band’s “Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler),” a hit from 1984, as well as a fitting name for a tour presented by Kenworth Trucking Company. In a stateme...
