Far-right political parties have turned to social networking to help them target young people ahead of the European elections. Tom Vandendriessche, a Belgian MEP for the Vlaams Belang believes the tactic may work as the younger generation is losing trust in traditional parties. "I think that young people look at the future and the future looks grim for them. How could they have trust in these traditional parts, the Christian Democrats, the Social Democrats, the Liberal Democrats who have been governing us for decades and who have brought us into this mess of uncontrolled borders, of mass migra...

Germany has witnessed a surge in right-wing, racist, and anti-Semitic violence, reaching unprecedented levels, since 2013. Mayar, a 20-year-old nurse who fled Syria during the war and has lived in Germany for nearly nine years, feels a strong sense of German identity, having grown up there. He recounts the mome...

At an Alternative for Germany (AfD) European election campaign in Berlin, two of the far-right party's candidates, Dr Alexander Sell and Mary Khan-Holoch, discussed national pride and how the AfD hopes to make Germans proud of being German again. The crowd was largely made up of pensioners. However, there were also quite a few young people in the mix. Khan-Holoch herself is 30 years old, and she did not hesitate in her answer to the question of what makes the AfD so attractive to first-time and young voters. "Germans feel afraid of becoming strangers in their own country," Khan-Holoch told Eur...

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has made gains in local elections in the state of Thuringia, but failed to secure outright victories – this after one of the party's best-known figures was recently convicted of knowingly using a Nazi slogan in a speech. Sunday's elections at county and mayoral level in Thuringia come ahead of a state election on 1 September in which Alternative for Germany's local leader, Björn Höcke, plans to run for the governor’s job. Official results with about four-fifths of districts counted on Monday showed Alternative for Germany, or AfD, gaining nearly nine...

Love. The Italian DJ Gigi D'Agostino sings so beautifully about it in the techno anthem “L'Amour Toujours”. But now the 1999 song is on the red list for some. At the Munich Oktoberfest in Germany, organisers want to ban the song to prevent racist singing by beered-up visitors as it has taken on right-wing extremist connotation in recent weeks. “We want to ban it and I will ban it”, Oktoberfest boss Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) told the German news agency dpa. “There's no place for all that right-wing bullshit at the Wiesn,” he added, using the colloquial name for the event. The Oktoberfest is a “...

Maximilian Krah, the lead candidate for the European elections for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), has resigned from the party's federal executive board following pressure from France's Rassemblement National (RN), Italy's Lega and the Danish People's Party (DF). "I recognise that factual and nuanced statements from me are being misused as a pretext to damage our party," Krah wrote in a statement posted on X. "The last thing we need at the moment is a debate about me. The AfD must maintain its unity. For this reason, I will refrain from further campaign appearances with immediate ...

The campaign for the European elections is in full swing in Germany but has been overshadowed by recent attacks on politicians. Last month, politician Matthias Ecke from the Social Democrats (SPD) spent several days in hospital after being beaten up whilst hanging up campaign posters. Green politicians have also experienced a recent spike in threats. Green party candidate Yvonne Mosler was spat on and threatened last week whilst campaigning. She said she has noticed how the attitude towards politicians has changed ...

Björn Höcke, who is one of the best-known figures in the far-right Alternative for Germany party, has been fined for using a Nazi slogan in a speech. The verdict on Tuesday in his trial comes months before a regional election in the eastern state of Thuringia in which he plans to run for the governor’s job. The state court in the eastern city of Halle convicted Höcke of using symbols of an unconstitutional organisation, German news agency dpa reported. It imposed a fine of 13,000 euros. A payment card exclusively for asylum-seekers has been introduced in Germany, following the recent parliamentary approval of a new rule. Under the new regulation, migrants are issued a card to access their benefits, which can be used at local stores and for services, but it limits their cash withdrawals and bans international money transfers. The aim is to prevent migrants from sending money to family and friends abroad, or to smugglers. In Eichsfeld, Thuringia, 45-year-old Laca from Albania and her family were among the first in Germany to receive half of their government benefits as cashless...

Germany's far-right Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party is under fire. On Wednesday, an advisor to the AfD's lead candidate in European elections Maximilian Krah was arrested and sacked for allegedly spying for the Chinese government. Krah has strongly denied being involved with the espionage, vowing to still stand in the upcoming European Parliament elections - just six weeks away. This is the second time in a month the anti-immigrant party has faced corruption allegations, with the AfD's second EU candidate Petr Bystron denying accusations he took €20,000 to spread Kremlin propaganda. "A...
