Pigeons have to be one of the most unloved animals that humans ever drew to our side. The birds that flock European squares descended from domesticated rock doves some 10,000 years ago, and so are unusually relaxed around humans. The feeling isn’t mutual, however. These gregarious birds tend to bring out irritation and disgust in people - as well as more nurturing instincts in those willing to share their crumbs. But the pigeon-human relationship has taken a more drastic turn in one German town. Limburg an der Lahn, in the western German state of Hesse, has just voted to exterminate its 700-st...

A group of 32 monkeys drowned in a well in India after extreme temperatures drove them on a desperate search for water. The monkeys were found dead in an irrigation well in Jharkhand state, according to local forest officials. They jumped into a well with steep sides to find water as other sources had dried up but couldn’t get out. Officials found water in the animals’ lungs and no foul play in their deaths. Wild animals have been making their way into villages throughout the heatwave. Several jackals also died after falling into a well while searching for water a few days ago. The unprecedent...

A company that bred beagles for medical research agreed to pay a record $35 million (€32 million) in a landmark animal-welfare case on Monday in Virginia. Envigo RMS, the company running the facility, and its parent company Inotiv, admitted to neglecting thousands of dogs at their breeding site. The company was accused of keeping dogs in cages that were only cleaned twice a month, which is far less than the required daily cleaning. Dogs were euthanized without sedation, and many were injured by the metal grate floors. The food and water provided were also not enough and were dirty. US Attorney...

Earlier this month, Malaysia announced plans to gift orangutans to countries that buy its palm oil. Dubbed “orangutan diplomacy,” the strategy aims to mitigate the environmental damage of palm oil production. The commodity is found in over half of supermarket packaged goods from ice cream to lipstick and plantations are a major driver of deforestation in Malaysia. But clearing land for palm oil plantations is destroying orangutan habitats. The southeast Asian country’s proposed orangutan policy is the latest example of “animal diplomacy,” where living animals are used by governments in their i...

As sea levels and temperatures rise, weather events worsen, and an increasing number of species face extinction, it’s more important than ever that we do more than pay lip service to reducing our environmental footprint — and that we do it without meat in our mouths. We could have once been forgiven for not realising that animal agriculture — which encompasses not only meat but also egg and dairy production and co-products like leather and wool — is a leading driver of climate destruction, second only to fossil fuels. But now it seems that every second scientific study warns us of the huge env...

A picture of a fake headline from Irish broadcaster RTÉ claims that Ireland has allocated over €100 million-worth of funding for Ukrainian pets. It’s being shared on social media as if it were a legitimate news story, but that’s not the case. The fake screenshot circulating on X uses RTÉ News’s logo and colour scheme and says that the Irish government has signed off on "another €150 million allocation for Ukrainian pet welfare". However there’s no evidence whatsoever that the story is real - an internet search doesn’t yield any results, only fact-checks already debunking the story. Fact-check:...

Demand for octopus as food has grown significantly in recent decades. Yet with concerns around overfishing restricting the number of wild octopuses caught, businesses have been researching how they can farm them. Crucially, octopuses are naturally solitary animals who will inevitably suffer in farm conditions. Confined in cramped indoor tanks of water, these intelligent, unique and sentient wild animals would cause them immense distress, causing aggression, and ultimately even cannibalism. They are also carnivorous, meaning they need to be fed wild fish in captivity — an unsustainable practice...

Each April, more than 150,000 people attend an event that celebrates horse deaths. Of course, the promoters don’t frame the Grand National Festival this way, but let’s call it what it is: just another event where horses are exploited for profit. Inevitably, this year was no different. Two horses suffered fatal — and completely avoidable — injuries. Yet again, blood is on the hands of everyone involved in the event’s organisation or who attended the three-day meeting at Aintree, and yet again, we’re reminded that horse racing needs to end. The Grand National meeting is one of the deadliest in t...

New York lawmakers are proposing rules to humanely drive down the population of rats and other rodents, eyeing contraception and a ban on glue traps as alternatives to poison or a slow, brutal death. Politicians have long come up with creative ways to battle the rodents, but some lawmakers are now proposing city and statewide measures to do more. In New York City, the idea to distribute rat contraceptives got fresh attention in city government last week following the death of an escaped zoo owl, known as Flaco, who was found dead with rat poison in his system. City Council Member Shaun Abreu p...
