The Philippe Bettan Gallery in Lyon, France has opened a new exhibition featuring the works of young Iranian painter Elham Etemadi, curated by artistic director Aida Mojallal. Etemadi, who has exhibited her art in galleries around the world, finds her paintings subconsciously influenced by the changes and events in her homeland. "In my works, the subconscious reveals itself through symbols, layered techniques, compositions where sometimes women take the central role," she explains. "This issue has not always been directly and explicitly present in my works, but I cannot say it has not had an i...

The exterior of the Canada pavilion at the Venice Biennale is draped with hundreds of blue-beaded strings suspended from the roof lintels and cascading down the brickwork walls. Inside are thousands more in sunset hues veiling the pavilion interior. The strings are threaded with minute seed beads - tiny objects that carry a weighty history. Artist Kapwani Kiwanga explores the pivotal role of these Murano-made glass beads in the history of global trade and their “complex legacy”. But for an installation set in Venice, there is surprisingly little acknowledgement of the significance of seed bead...

King Charles III has unveiled the first completed portrait of the monarch since he assumed the throne. The vivid, larger-than-life image depicts him in the bright red uniform of the Welsh Guards against a background of similar hues. The last sitting took place in November 2023 at Clarence House, one of the king’s residences in London. The painting captures the king with his hands clasped atop the hilt of his sword and a butterfly flittin...

Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils, is considered one of the top urban artists in the world. Like many street artists, he started out painting illegal graffiti back when he was 13. But by the age of 16, the Portuguese artist was already questioning what he was doing and looking for his signature style. “I wanted to push what I was doing in the public space,” he says. “I sort of realised that all of us were adding layers on walls ... they were accumulating the layers of changes. “I came up with the idea: instead of adding I would remove the layers of paint onto the walls.” Pinta Malasaña: Street artist...

Well, enter British pop artist Philip Colbert, also known as The Lobster, who has teamed up with some of Italian football titans AS Roma's biggest players in a truly unique artistic collaboration. Following his unconventional artistic takeover of AS Roma’s stadium last November...

In the desert-hued pavilion of Saudi Arabia at the Venice Biennale, a rising harmonised humming fills the space. These are the voices of some 1,000 Saudi women that artist Manal AlDowayan has “brought with her” to the international exhibition. With her all-female team of curators, AlDowayan’s installation aims to be a rebuttal of the international media’s preconceptions of women in Saudi Arabia and an amplification of their own voices instead. In Lebanon’s pavilion, artist Mounira AI Solh challenges the male gaze and the way it has shaped the ancient myth of Europa. Like AlDowayan, she returns...
