Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront plays host to a series of large-scale inflatable installations inspired by some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks from Friday until August 11. Inflatable versions of the UK’s Stonehenge, the Moai of Easter Island in Chile, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Italy’s Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Arc de Triomphe in France – some more than 13 metres tall – will be on display. Inspired by images conceived by Armenian AI studio Joann, the “Inflatable Wonders” will be illuminated at night. “These huge installations will surely become must-visit landmarks along...

Exhibitors at Hong Kong’s upcoming annual book fair should comply with the Beijing-imposed national security law and the city’s homegrown security law, the event’s organiser has said. The fair, hosted by statutory body the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 17 until July 23. It is the first book fair to be held since the domestic security law, known colloquially as Article 23, came into effect in March.

October 19, 1996, was just another day for many Hongkongers, apart from a minor typhoon which brought heavy rain. Some enjoyed time with their families that Saturday, others went to the races, a few went to church. The weather that day failed to deter art lovers, with 122 separate events staged across the city. In those final months of British colonial rule, there were few boundaries between art and politics. Earlier in 1996 a play had been performed which featured Article 23 of the Basic Law, due to come into force after the Handover to China on July 1, 1997. There was also much speculation a...

By Lu Jiaxin Through Rain’s headphones, the lyrics, “I could be a river, I sweep you away, posit all my creatures at the grave where you lay.” played on an endless loop. They were from a song called Metamorphosis by Rain’s favourite screamo band, Your Arms Are My Cocoon from Chicago. It was early April and at a university in mainland China’s Guangdong province, Rain, who asked to be identified by a pseudonym for privacy reasons, was daydreaming about attending the band’s concert in Hong Kong later that month. However, Rain hadn’t yet received a visa for the city and the clock was ticking. Born...

The government has said that a sculpture formerly on display outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre was being repaired after it was covered by hoarding boards and later removed, sparking censorship concerns online. The artwork by the late Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming features 10 figures standing in a line – some in black suits, one in pink and two in yellow raincoats. Local media reported on Wednesday that it had been covered with hoarding, which bore a photo of the sculpture on in. However, the two figures in yellow raincoats in the image were obscured by a notice, informing people that a reinfo...
