A rare first edition Harry Potter book had been sold at auction for more than £45,000 (approx. €53,000). The novel, "The Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", was auctioned off at the Lyon and Turnbull auction house in Edinburgh. The copy of J. K. Rowling’s book is one of the first 500 printed in 1997; publishers produced only a small number of copies because of the uncertainty towards its popularity. It was predicted to sell for between £40,000 and £60,000, because of some unique errors. The book eventually sold for £45,201 (€53,500), and features a spelling mistake of ‘Philosopher’s’ on...

Christie’s is set to auction Titian's 'Rest on the Flight to Egypt,' a painting by the illustrious Italian master that has not been seen on the market for 145 years. The exquisite piece, expected to fetch up to £25 million (€30m), depicts a serene moment as the Holy Family pauses on their journey to Egypt. Mary tenderly cradles the infant Jesus while Joseph looks on. It is one of the last of the Renaissance master's early religious works still in private hands so its upcoming auction by Christie's is attracting a lot of attention. However, the painting, created around 1510, has been desirable ...

In 2019, the southern Italian village of Sambuca di Sicilia went viral for selling off homes for as little as €1. Schemes like this have become a popular way for rural towns with dwindling populations to boost their number of residents and prevent disused houses from falling into disrepair. But while the initiatives flopped in some places, Sambuca’s sellers were met with floods of requests. Buyers came from as far away as the US and the Middle East. The sales injected some €20 million into the local economy. Now, the Sicilian village is putting more houses under the hammer. As with last time, ...

A plastic Star Wars action figure has become the world’s most valuable vintage toy. The ultra-rare, hand-painted, 3 and 3/4-inch, rocket-packing Boba Fett figurine just fetched $525,000 (approx. €482,000) at auction. It is one of only two known to have survived the production line in the 1970s, officials at Heritage Auctions announced this week. The model was created by toy company Kenner in 1979 based on the character, who was set to appear in The Empire Strikes Back. The toy was not available in stores and was to be sent for free to anyone who could prove they had bought four other Star Wars...

A complete manuscript of French author and philosopher Albert Camus' famous novel “L'Étranger” (“The Stranger”) is to be auctioned today (Wednesday 5 June) at Tajan in Paris. It is estimated at between €500,000 and €800,000. “Its history and precise dating are mysterious,” the auction house points out in its presentation of the handwritten 104-page manuscript. The mystery has to do with the date. Camus ends the manuscript with the inscription “April 1940”. “L'Étranger” was indeed written at that time in Paris and corrected until September 1941, before being published by Gallimard in May 1942. ...

After spending the last 50 years in an attic, John Lennon’s famous 'Help!' guitar has broken records at auction. On the first day of its "Music Icons" sale at the Hard Rock Cafe New York, Julien's Auctions sold the Framus 12-string Hootenanny acoustic guitar for a record-breaking $2.9 million (€2.68 million). That makes it the most expensive Beatles guitar to sell at auction. The guitar was used by Lennon to record songs for their 1965 studio album 'Help!' and film of the same name, helping create some of the band's biggest hits of the '60s. Both Lennon and George Harrison played the Framus 12...

British artist Damien Hirst is once again accused of falsifying the age of his artworks. An investigation by The Guardian has claimed that at least 1,000 of the 10,000 paintings used in Hirst’s 2022 project ‘The Currency’ were created at a later date than originally suggested. In 2022, Hirst made headlines with ‘The Currency’, an experimental art project where the artist sold 10,000 of his paintings to buyers who could choose whether they would rather receive the works in physical or NFT form. Any paintings that were bought in NFT form were then burnt at an event held in October 2022. In total...

New York (AFP) - New York's major auction houses were preparing for the start of their all-important Spring sales on Monday even as Christie's came under a cyberattack that affected its website. After a drop in sales in 2023, there is hope among the hammer-wielders that good results in Europe so far this year will be repeated stateside. David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Leonora Carrington, Joan Mitchell, Brice Marden, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alberto Giacometti, Georgia O'Keeffe are among the prominent artists on offer when Sotheby's gets the season underway on Monday. Christie's and Ph...

Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey, 87, famously sang about diamonds in the 1971 James Bond film and said she accepted the offer to sing the track as the lyrics “rang true to me and the way I felt about diamonds then and now.” Now, she is auctioning some of her "meaningful" jewels, including a diamond ring given to her by Sir Elton John. But unless you’re Goldfinger, good luck getting your hands on these. Although we doubt that the Bond villain would have done it for charity, as the items she collected throughout her career will be sold at Sotheby's Paris, with the proceeds benefiting Bassey’s c...
