Battery costs have dropped by more than 90 per cent in the last 15 years, a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) reveals. It’s one of the fastest declines ever seen among clean energy technologies, and provides hope that batteries can carry the world to its renewable energy goals. While we still tend to think of lithium-ion batteries as a component of consumer electronics like phones and laptops, the tech is playing an increasingly huge part in the energy sector - which now accounts for over 90 per cent of overall battery demand. In 2023 alone, battery deployment in the power ...

US private equity giant Blackstone has recently announced that it has bought some property in Cambois, Northumberland, which investors had once expected would be used to build Britain’s first electric vehicle (EV) battery gigafactory. Britishvolt, a UK lithium-ion battery manufacturing start-up, backed by mining heavyweight Glencore, was supposed to take over this particular piece of land, in order to build a £3.8 billion (€4.45 billion) gigafactory. However, in January 2023, before the company could fulfil these ambitious plans, it went into administration. This led to over 200 employees bein...

Deep in the Arizona desert, a Danish company is building a massive solar farm that includes batteries that charge when the sun is shining and supply energy back to the electric grid when it's not. “Solar farms only produce when the sun shines, and the turbines only produce when the wind blows,” said Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper. “For us to maximise the availability of the green power, 24-7, we have to store some of it too.” Back in Arizona, Ørsted’s Eleven Mile Solar Center covers 2,000 acres in rural Pinal County. It has 857,000 solar panels and more than 2,000 cubes that look like large shipping c...

A huge sand battery is set to slash the carbon emissions of a Finnish town. The industrial-scale storage unit in Pornainen, southern Finland, will be the world’s biggest sand battery when it comes online within a couple of years. Capable of storing 100 MWh of thermal energy from solar and wind sources, it will enable residents to eliminate oil from their district heating network, helping to cut emissions by nearly 70 per cent. "It's exciting to build a large-scale thermal energy storage, which will also act as a primary production plant in Pornainen's district heating network,” says Liisa Nask...

Tata, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has revealed it is building the biggest electric vehicle gigafactory in the UK, in the south-west county of Somerset. The brownstone site, at the Gravity Smart Campus in Puriton, near Bridgwater, was previously a Royal Ordnance Factory from the World War II, until it stopped operating in 2008. It is expected to manufacture about 40GWh worth of battery cells every year, which should account for around 500,000 vehicles. The company has revealed it will start off producing batteries for JLR vehicles such as the Defender, Range Rover and Jaguar brands. H...

A company in New Zealand is turning discarded woodchips into synthetic graphite that can be used in EV batteries. CarbonScape makes ‘biographite’ by heating byproducts from the forestry industry using a process called thermo-catalytic graphitisation. This produces charcoal, which can be catalysed and purified into battery anode-quality graphite. The startup says their alternative graphite is a more sustainable option and can help Europe reduce its dependence on China for lithium-ion batteries. What is biographite and why is it important? The graphite key to making EV batteries is currently sour...
