The number of heat-related howler monkeys deaths in Mexico has risen to 157, the government said, with a tragically small number of the primates treated or recovering. Meanwhile, an animal park in northern Mexico confirmed it has received reports that at least a hundred parrots, bats and other animals have died, apparently of dehydration. A heat dome \- an area of strong high pressure centred over the southern Gulf of Mexico and northern Central America - has blocked clouds from forming and caused extensive sunshine and hot temperatures all across Mexico. Inside Japan's cat island where feline...

A headless, four-legged robot will be employed protect wildlife at a US airport. About the size of a Labrador, it will be camouflaged as a coyote or fox to ward off migratory birds and other animals. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has named the new robot Aurora and said it will be based at the Fairbanks airport - the state's second largest - to “enhance and augment safety and operations", the Anchorage Daily News reported. The transportation department released a video of the robot climbing rocks, going up stairs and doing something akin to dancing while flashing...

A photo of a barnacle-covered football has snatched the top prize in this year’s British Wildlife Photography Awards. Photographer Ryan Stalker found the ball washed up on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, off England’s south coast. As goose barnacles are not native to the UK, he believes it had made an epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean, spurred on by powerful storms. Above the water, it just looks like a regular football. But just below the surface, a colony of goose barnacles clings to its underside - a poignant reminder of the impact of human-caused pollution on the ocean’s delicate ecosys...

A flock of finches, the birds famously studied by Charles Darwin in his theory of evolution, have been reintroduced to an area of the Galapagos Islands. Since 2023 experts have been working to eradicate introduced species which have caused the disappearance of numerous native species, paving the way for ecological restoration. "This is a very special day,” says Eliécer Cruz, Spokesman for the Jocotoco Conservation Foundation. “Maintaining viable population percentages in case of unforeseen circumstances is the Floreana Project’s most important mitigation measure. Species found nowhere else in ...

Paris (AFP) - Crickets and the birds that snack on them are not natural allies, but they do have a common enemy, according to a pair of studies published Wednesday: roadside noise pollution. Vehicle traffic makes it much harder for at least one species of bird to solve problems, and sharply compromises the ability of some crickets to mate, lab experiments showed. "Hearing the noises of cars driving by is enough to inhibit cognitive performance in songbirds," Christopher Templeton, a biologist at Pacific University in Oregon and senior author of a study in the scientific journal Proceedings of ...
