A photo of a barnacle-covered football has snatched the top prize in this year’s British Wildlife Photography Awards. Photographer Ryan Stalker found the ball washed up on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, off England’s south coast. As goose barnacles are not native to the UK, he believes it had made an epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean, spurred on by powerful storms. Above the water, it just looks like a regular football. But just below the surface, a colony of goose barnacles clings to its underside - a poignant reminder of the impact of human-caused pollution on the ocean’s delicate ecosys...

Cyprus has seen a “staggering” increase in songbird killing, according to a new report tracking organised wildlife crime. 435,000 birds, including blackcaps, warblers and robins, were caught in poachers’ nets last autumn, according to BirdLife Cyprus and RSPB [researchers](http://Cyprus%20has%20seen%20a%20%E2%80%9Cstaggering%E2%80%9D%20increase%20in%20songbird%20killing,%20according%20to%20a%20new%20report%20tracking%20organised%20wildlife%20crime.%20%20%20435,000%20birds,%20including%20blackcaps,%20warblers%20and%20robins,%20were%20caught%20in%20poachers%E2%80%99%20nets%20last%20autumn,%20acc...

A flock of finches, the birds famously studied by Charles Darwin in his theory of evolution, have been reintroduced to an area of the Galapagos Islands. Since 2023 experts have been working to eradicate introduced species which have caused the disappearance of numerous native species, paving the way for ecological restoration. "This is a very special day,” says Eliécer Cruz, Spokesman for the Jocotoco Conservation Foundation. “Maintaining viable population percentages in case of unforeseen circumstances is the Floreana Project’s most important mitigation measure. Species found nowhere else in ...

Hundreds of surveyors have taken part in the 21st Hungarian Eagle Census attempting to count the numbers of wintering eagles as accurately as possible. Tracking them down requires a combined effort from NGOs and wildlife and conservation organisations across the country. This year, the Saker Falcon has been chosen as the census's Bird of the Year. More than 60% of the falcons in Europe nest in Hungary - and the only proven stable, slightly increasing population of the species dwells in the Carpathian Basin. "There were 2.5 by 2.5 square kilometre areas where collecting has taken place," explai...

Humans have wiped out around 1,400 bird species - double the amount previously thought - a recent study has found. This amounts to one in nine or 12 per cent of species being lost over modern human history, according to the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). Deforestation, overhunting and the introduction of invasive species are some of the main threats introduced by humans since the Late Pleistocene period around 130,000 years ago. “Humans have rapidly devastated bird populations via habitat loss, overexploitation and the introduction of rats, pigs and dogs that raided nests of birds ...

Since passage of the Endangered Species Act 50 years ago, more than 1,700 plants, mammals, fish, insects and other species in the US have been listed as threatened or endangered with extinction. Yet federal government data reveals striking disparities in how much money is allocated to save various biological kingdoms. Of the roughly $1.2 billion (€1.09 bn) a year spent on endangered and threatened species, about half goes toward recovery of just two types of fish: salmon and steelhead trout along the West Coast. Tens of millions of dollars go to other widely known animals including manatees, r...
