Russia has begun firing Kalibr cruise missiles from warships in the Azov Sea as stationing them in the Black Sea is no longer safe enough, Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said on June 22. Russian forces launched missile and drone attacks overnight on June 22, targeting critical energy infrastructure in multiple Ukrainian regions. According to Pletenchuk, four of the 16 missiles launched during the attack were Kalibr cruise missiles launched from ships in the Sea of Azov. Earlier reports said they had been fired from the Black Sea. "Four miss...

Ukrferry, Ukraine's ferry operator in the Black Sea, has restored ferry service between Ukraine and Georgia, according to the schedule on the company's website. Ukrferry suspended its operations with Georgia when the all-out war started on Feb. 24, 2022. The sea voyage from the city of Chernomorsk in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast to the port of Batumi in Georgia will be the first between the countries since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. Editor's note: The story is being updated. Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) carried out a naval strike in occupied Crimea overnight on June 6, destroying a Project 498 "Saturn" raiding tugboat, the agency said. The agency's spokesperson, Andrii Yusov, reported on the vessel's destruction earlier the same day on national television. The boat was destroyed in Panske Lake, which lies on Crimea's western shores, only a few kilometers from the coastal town of Chornomorske. Ukrainian naval drones operated by the military intelligence agency reportedly destroyed two other boats near Chorn...

Russian forces have encountered a new enemy in the Black Sea: Ukraine’s arsenal of naval kamikaze drones. These deceptively small unmanned vehicles have targeted Russia’s Black Sea Fleet since September 2022, picking off Russian battleships one by one. The latest of Ukraine’s maritime conquests was the Russian Mangust-class patrol boat, which it destroyed off the coast of occupied Crimea with a MAGURA naval drone. Ukraine shifted its focus to naval drones after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Due to their unavailability on the market, the Ukrainian military decided ...

Losses caused by the Polish blockade of the Ukrainian border amounted to $500 million in lost imports and $160 million in exports in its first month, the National Bank of Ukraine said on May 14. Polish farmers and truckers held protests at the border due to fear of uneven competition with their Ukrainian counterparts, first between November 2023 and January and then in another wave starting in February. By late April, the protests were largely over. The lost imports were partially compensated through alternative supplies, and the exports were offset by trade via the new Black Sea corridor, the...

Ukrainian grain exports decreased in March and are expected to further slow down this year amid lower supply and smaller harvest predictions. Grain exports amounted to 5.2 million metric tons in March, down from 5.8 million metric tons the month before, according to various estimates. After Kyiv set up its own corridor in the Black Sea following Russia’s withdrawal from the U.N.-brokered Black Sea Grain Initiative in July 2023, shippers rushed to get grain to market, leading to higher export volumes in recent months. The larger volumes were also due to large backlogs of grain traders had to se...
