Investigators in 19 countries have taken down one of the world's largest phishing platforms, according to the EU law enforcement agency Europol on Thursday. Police arrested 37 suspects, including four alleged masterminds of the LabHost platform based in the United Kingdom, according to Europol. The agency said that the LabHost platform offered fake websites and software for cyber criminals. Brexit and its consequences continue to put a strain on German trade relations with Britain. "Increased administrative costs, logistics costs and customs duties are proving to be ongoingly painful," according to a survey by the British Chamber of Commerce in Germany (BCCG) and the auditing firm KPMG, which was made available to dpa in London. New regulations have led to an increasing decoupling of Britain from the European Union. The results were to be presented on Thursday as part of the Ludwig Erhard Summit in the Bavarian town of Tegernsee. "The decline in the volume of German-British trade...

The US and Britain are extending their ban on imports of metals produced in Russia, due to the Russian war against Ukraine. Aluminium, copper and nickel produced in Russia after April 13 will no longer be traded on the world's two largest metal exchanges in London and Chicago, the US and British treasury departments announced overnight on Friday night. This would exclude Russian metal producers from the profits of the London Metal Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and reduce an important source of income for the Kremlin to finance its war in Ukraine. The joint action by the two coun...

New York (AFP) - Salman Rushdie, targeted for assassination since 1989 over his writing, had long wondered who would kill him. When he was stabbed almost fatally, his first thought was, "So it's you." The novelist has recounted his thoughts on his 2022 near death in a book, "Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder," which is set for publication on Tuesday. In an excerpt from the book which he read for the CBS News show "60 Minutes," Rushdie described "the last thing my right eye would ever see" -- a man in black clothes "coming in hard and low" like a "squat missile." "I confess, I had so...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Britain's Prince Harry and his actress wife Meghan Markle are working on two nonfiction series with Netflix -- a lifestyle program and a show on professional polo, their production company announced Thursday. The couple, who split with the British monarchy in 2020 and now reside in California, signed a deal with the streaming giant that same year for multiple projects. So far, the partnership has yielded the much-talked-about "Harry & Meghan," a six-episode docuseries launched in December 2022. The new projects seem far less controversial. The first, "curated by Meghan... w...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden said Wednesday he was "considering" a request by Australia to drop the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on espionage charges. Australia's parliament passed a motion in February with the prime minister's support calling for an end to the legal saga surrounding Assange, who has been held in Britain since 2019 while fighting extradition to the United States. "We're considering it," Biden replied at the White House when asked by a reporter if he had a response to Australia's request. Biden, who took the question while walking with visiting J...

Washington (AFP) - British Foreign Secretary David Cameron pleaded Tuesday for US Republicans to approve billions of dollars in military support for Ukraine as he made his case directly to Donald Trump. The former Conservative prime minister had dinner Monday with Trump, the ex-president and Republican challenger to Joe Biden in November, at his Florida estate before heading to Washington. Speaking the next day alongside Biden's top diplomat Antony Blinken, Cameron described his meeting with Trump as "private" but said he raised issues including "the future of NATO," the Western alliance which...
