Washington (AFP) - The next US census and federal government forms will include new options for race and ethnicity including a category for people of Middle Eastern or North African origin, officials said. The changes, the first in nearly three decades, were announced by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and published in the Federal Register on Friday. "These updated standards will help create more useful, accurate and up-to-date federal data on race and ethnicity," US Chief Statistician Karin Orvis said in a statement. "These revisions will enhance our ability to compare information a...

Washington (AFP) - US inflation-adjusted incomes fell for a third straight year in 2022, but overall income inequality decreased, according to new Census Bureau data. In a positive development, the poverty rate for the Black population declined to 17.1 percent -- its lowest level on record -- although it remained the highest among the racial groups counted by the Census Bureau. The data published Tuesday by the Census Bureau paints a mixed picture of the US economy, with the overall decline in incomes falling more sharply for some people than for others, due largely to the impact of inflatio...

Washington (AFP) - US life expectancy dropped by 1.8 years in 2020, final official figures showed Wednesday, the steepest drop in more than 75 years driven in large part by the Covid-19 pandemic. Life expectancy at birth was 77.0 years for the total US population last year, down from 78.8 years in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among men it was 74.2 years, while for women the figure was 79.9 years. Overall, Covid was the third-leading cause of death, accounting for 350,000 fatalities, just over a tenth of all registered deaths, said a CDC report, which...

New York (AFP) - The number of US residents who identify as "white" has fallen for the first time, according to the latest 2020 census data released Thursday. The United States has grown "more racially and ethnically diverse" and more urban over the past 10 years, according to the Census Bureau. The "white" population decreased by 8.6 percent between 2010 and 2020, a first since the earliest such data was taken in 1790. It remains the largest group in the country, last year representing 204 million residents, or 61.6 percent of the population. A decade earlier people identifying as white comp...

Washington (AFP) - The right-leaning US Supreme Court appeared doubtful Monday about President Donald Trump's plan to exclude potentially millions of illegal immigrants from the national census count, which could shift the balance of US politics over the next decade. But it was not clear if the nine justices would block Trump or let him follow through in the last weeks of his administration, likely sparking a messy and more prolonged court battle next year when he is out of office.Trump, who has pursued a broad anti-immigrant policy over the last four years, has radically challenged the inclusi...

Washington (AFP) - US President Donald Trump's administration wages its last major policy fight before the Supreme Court Monday as it seeks to exclude undocumented immigrants from the population count used to determine states' representation in Congress. If the outgoing president's plan goes forward, states with large numbers of undocumented immigrants could see their influence reduced in the US House of Representatives. It would amount to a last-minute victory or defeat for Trump, who is due to leave the White House and hand over to President-elect Joe Biden on January 20 even though he is stil...
