Somehow, in a career that’s produced some of the most acclaimed and popular films of the 21st century, Christopher Nolan has never won an Oscar. While his films have picked up stray prizes here or there, Nolan himself has gone unrecognized by the Academy Awards until now. 2024 was finally Nolan’s moment. The man behind such modern classics as Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, and more took home the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on the blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer. Nolan prevailed in the face of major competition, beating out Anatomy of a Fall’s Justine Triet, ...

For the first time in his career, Robert Downey Jr. is an Oscar winner. Downey won this year’s Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Downey’s performance was essential to the film; a large portion of it was built around Strauss’ Senate confirmation hearing for the position of Secretary of Commerce. Strauss’ testimony, and the testimony of others, sparks flashbacks to the past, revealing how Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer grew to lead the Manhattan Project which developed the world’s first atomic weapon, and then how hi...

The Oscars are upon us once again. After a season filled with drama, excitement, great movies, and fake noses, the winners will finally be revealed. Christopher Nolan wants to make a horror movie. The Oppenheimer director has revealed he is a huge fan of the genre and would relish the opportunity to work on his own horror film. During a conversation with the British Film Institute, he said: “I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. It’s really about [provoking] a visceral response to things. So at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea — and those are few and far between. So I haven’t found the story that lends itse...

Oppenheimer is now available to watch at home. Probably that’s not the way director Christopher Nolan would prefer you to see his latest large-scale epic. But, look, sometimes you can’t make it to the theater. Or the IMAX was sold out every time you tried to go. Or your babysitter just upped their prices. For you, there is streaming. Nolan’s latest is a complex historical drama about the life of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy. Set in multiple time periods, the film tells Oppenheimer’s life story and considers the development and impact of the first atomic bomb, which...

Robert Downey Jr. feels that the success of Oppenheimer could herald a new era for cinema. The 58-year-old actor starred in Christopher Nolan’s box-office smash as Lewis Strauss and believes that it could lead to a new type of blockbuster that keeps budgets under control while maintaining the hype of a major movie. Downey told The New York Times: “Fiscally responsible event cinema. It almost laughs in the face of what I grew up in: The ’80s, bloated, big-budget behemoth that you go, ‘It doesn’t matter, because they’re still going to double their money.’” Nolan confessed that he was also taken ...

I rewatched Christopher Nolan’s Tenet shortly before Oppenheimer opened in theaters and felt, somewhat strangely, that I understood the film less than the first time I saw it. Maybe the first time I got swept up in the overall story of a mysterious organization protecting our present from time “inverting” interlopers from the future. Seeing it again and knowing what would happen in the narrative, I was able to think more about the specifics of how the time travel aspect worked, and became a little lost in some of the details. I can‘t think of another movie that confused me more on second viewi...
