Cloud modifying techniques used to cool the climate in California could eventually push heatwaves towards Europe, according to a new study. If global warming reaches 2C above pre-industrial by 2050, cloud modification could majorly warm almost all of Europe except the Iberian Peninsula. The research showed the biggest increases in Scandinavia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The study’s authors say their findings are concerning because there are next to no regulations in place for this kind of local climate modification and the consequences could be hard to predict. “Our study provides the ...

Voters in France head to the polls this week to cast their ballot in the first round of a snap parliamentary election called by President Emmanuel Macron, who has championed France’s “start-up nation” since his 2017 election. But France’s technology companies fear that a far-right or far-left majority could put the brakes on the country’s ambition to be Europe’s start-up champion and for Paris to be the city of artificial intelligence (AI). The political uncertainty has not only rattled investors in French tech but could also stop Macron’s tech initiatives such as the French Tech Visa, which i...

This week saw Brussels come to life again after the lull around the EU elections with incoming MEPS busy taking selfies to show their voters that they are getting down to work. The big happening of the week, however, was EU leaders catching up on the European Parliament elections but their seven-hour summit was anti-climatic as they failed to reach an agreement on who get what top Brussels job. "I think it's our collective duty to make a decision by the end of June. I made it several times publicly," EU Council president Charles Michel said. But the summit proved a good day out for this man - ...

The rise of terms like climate anxiety and eco-anxiety in recent years reflects the growing concern over climate change’s emotional impact, especially among the youth. A new study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology investigated how the Norwegian public perceives and reacts to the term “climate anxiety.” The study found that people reacted more negatively to the term climate anxiety compared to worry or concern. “I have been researching worry about climate change since 2018,” explained study author Thea Gregersen, a senior researcher at NORCE. “Around 2019, the term ‘climate a...

Los Angeles (AFP) - The US state of Hawaii has reached an historic agreement in response to litigation by youth activists, promising to speed up the de-carbonization of its transport sector to protect their right to a safe and healthy climate. Thirteen young people from across the islands brought the case in June 2022, arguing that their constitutional rights to a life-sustaining climate were being violated. They asked the state government to take action to implement its goals of net negative emissions in the transport system by 2045. "The passion demonstrated by these young people in advocati...

The European Commission has given Germany permission to invest around €3 billion in its hydrogen infrastructure to build long-distance pipelines. The commission on Friday said that the positive effects of the government subsidies would be greater than the potential damage that could be caused by distortions of competition. Germany and other countries are investing in hydrogen as a potentially climate-friendly fuel for use in industry and transport. The European Union generally has strict rules about state support for companies through direct subsidies or tax benefits. The rules are aimed at en...

Pékin (AFP) - Le bilan des pluies diluviennes et des inondations qui ont touché cette semaine la province de Guangdong, dans le sud de la Chine, s'est alourdi à 38 morts, a annoncé vendredi un média d'Etat.
