The European Investment Bank has earmarked €2bn in lending for over 100 cities that have signed up to an EU mission to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and the European Commission has set up a financial advisory service as the huge cost of the exercise becomes clear. The von der Leyen commission launched the ‘Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities’ project in April 2022, selecting 100 cities in the EU and 12 in countries associated with the Horizon Europe research funding facility out of a total of 377 who had expressed an interest. The new Climate City Capital Hub was announced at a...

One method of making electricity cleanly to address climate change has been quietly advancing and on Tuesday it hit a milestone. A California utility is backing the largest new geothermal power development in the US - 400 megawatts of clean electricity from the Earth’s heat - enough for some 400,000 homes. Utility company Southern California Edison will purchase the electricity from Fervo Energy, a Houston-based geothermal company, Fervo announced. The company is drilling up to 125 wells in southwest Utah. Clean electricity like this reduces the need for traditional power plants that cause cli...

Denmark will tax livestock farmers for greenhouse gases emitted by their cows, sheep and pigs from 2030, according to a radical new proposal by the Danish government. Taxation Minister Jeppe Bruus said the scheme aims to slash the Northern European country's greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from 1990 levels by 2030. Danish livestock farmers will be taxed 300 kroner per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030, and the tax will increase to 750 kroner by 2035. But due to an income tax deduction of 60%, the actual cost per ton will start at 120 kroner and increase to 300 kroner by 2035. “We will t...

As the Balkans baked in temperatures hovering or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in June, leaving up to six foreigners dead or missing, the Greek government is warning tourists of the dangers associated with the extreme heat. Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis said holidaymakers need to be "very careful" while visiting the country as it grapples with soaring temperatures, and to not take "unnecessary risks". "We have had cases of foreign travellers who lost their lives in Greece. They lost their lives because they underestimated the phenomenon," he told reporters at a press conference. Wa...

Heavy rains and lower temperatures are saturating bee colonies and their habitats in France. In Saint-Selve, southwestern France, one beekeeper says June is meant to be a "honey flow" month – but few hives are filled with the nectar-seeking insects. "Basically we’re supposed to be in a honey flow, so filled up with honey, but there are very few of them," Dominique Laforce said. The beekeeper said the rains are wetting the flowers to an extent that the bees can't get inside, "and it won’t go out and most of all the bee won’t succeed in finding out the nectar," she added. Four years ago the Euro...

As Europe swelters in an early heatwave, concerns are mounting about what Paris’s weather will be like during the upcoming Olympics. The event, kicking off on 24 July, could become the hottest Games on record, posing risks of serious illness and even death to athletes. A new report, Rings of Fire: Heat Risks at the 2024 Paris Olympics, describes the 34C temperatures at the 2021 Games in Tokyo as “a window into an alarming, escalating norm for Summer Olympics”. “Competitors vomited and fainted at finish lines, wheelchairs were deployed to carry athletes away from sun-scorched arenas and the fea...

Sitting on the tiny Thai island of Koh Mak as lightning flashed on the horizon, my eyes were glued to the AccuWeather app. I was mesmerised by the storm tracking feature, which followed the weather front as it erratically skirted my cliffside bungalow. On an island so obscure that it was absent from the world map up until the late 1960s - when German tourists became some of the first European visitors to what they dubbed the ‘Lost World’ - I wondered how a US weather service could so accurately predict the conditions here. So I decided to find out. What does it take to deliver some of the worl...

A landslide surged over a highway in central Ecuador on Sunday, killing at least seven people and leaving dozens more missing as heavy rains pummeled the country and caused rivers to overflow. It comes as heavy rains have drenched Ecuador and other parts of the region over the past several days. Authorities in the country say the flood of mud and debris ploughed down the hillside and hit three cars, two houses, and a bus in the Ecuadorian resort city of Baños. Rescuers were treating nine injured and had retrieved seven bodies from the disaster site, while 30 people were believed to be trapped ...

Last month, the AI Seoul Summit took place in South Korea, bringing government leaders together with tech companies, academics, and civil society to advance discussions on the safety of artificial intelligence. The event concluded with 16 of the world’s most powerful tech giants promising to minimise the risks of the AI revolution. These global corporations, including the likes of Microsoft, Meta and IBM, signed up to the newly developed "Frontier AI Safety Commitments". They will now have to publish their own safety frameworks, explaining how they will measure the risks of their AI models. Si...
