“What the hell is a climate migrant? I don't know,” Dominic Kniveton, a professor of climate change and society at the UK’s University of Sussex, says with a hint of a smile. “That all depends on who is asking and who is determining the rules.” Immigration and climate change are two hot-topic political issues - with concerns about the former fuelling far-right gains in the EU’s recent election, as some voters back tougher rules. The climate crisis is slowly making more and more places uninhabitable due to extreme weather and a lack of ways to make an income, and it’s often assumed this will le...

Temperatures in Romania's capital city of Bucharest exceeded 35 degrees over the weekend, forcing the city's workers to adapt around the higher temperatures. Employers took special measures for workers in restaurants, who were carrying out their shifts in extreme temperatures. Chef Justian Manea told Euronews, "It is probably 50 degrees near the grill, I haven't counted. But we are ok, we are taking turns. We will manage to get through this heatwave." A heatwave has been recorded across Romania, including in the southern region of Prahova, where experts have warned that 4,000 people will face ...

As the Balkans baked in temperatures hovering or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in June, leaving up to six foreigners dead or missing, the Greek government is warning tourists of the dangers associated with the extreme heat. Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis said holidaymakers need to be "very careful" while visiting the country as it grapples with soaring temperatures, and to not take "unnecessary risks". "We have had cases of foreign travellers who lost their lives in Greece. They lost their lives because they underestimated the phenomenon," he told reporters at a press conference. Wa...

Greece was hit by its earliest heatwave on record this month, causing multiple deaths and closing schools and tourist attractions. Temperatures have now dipped just below the official heatwave threshold of 38C, but little respite is expected for the rest of the summer. There is no doubt that the Mediterranean country is on the frontlines of human-caused climate change in Europe. Last year, it was scalded by a record long heatwave lasting 16 days, contributing to the EU’s largest ever wildfire as an area twice the size of Athens went up in smoke between July and August. At least 28 people were ...

Heavy rains in southern China have killed nine people and left six missing, state media reported Thursday. In Jiaoling county near the city of Meizhou, five people died and two were missing following floods, according to state broadcaster CCTV. In a separate district of Meizhou, four more were killed and four others were unaccounted for, CCTV said. It added that some areas have endured “once-a-century flooding… (or) the biggest since historical records began”. CCTV s...

Around 80 per cent of Italians want their country to focus on protecting and restoring nature - yet the government was among a handful to vote against the EU's landmark Nature Restoration Law on Monday. That's just one small insight from the People’s Climate Vote, the biggest ever standalone public opinion survey on climate change, which was released today. Respondents from around the world echoed this call for governments to do more, with 80 per cent saying they want stronger action on climate change. An even higher number - 86 per cent - want their countries to set aside geopolitical differe...

The high cost of hydrogen fuel stood in the way of mass adoption of the clean energy source, the city’s environment minister has said after the government announced its strategy for hydrogen energy development. Environment minister Tse Chin-wan told RTHK on Wednesday that the city would adopt hydrogen where it would be cost-effective, pointing to the high cost of the fuel and Hong Kong’s land crunch. “But in the long term, traditional forms of fuel such as coal, petrol, and natural gas will be gradually phased out,” he said. The city’s first hydrogen-fuelled double-decker bus commenced service...

EURONEWS: You’re joining the Greens at a time when they’ve just taken a bit of a battering, losing 18 of 71 seats. Do you see this as a worrying sign of falling public support for climate and environmental action, and the end of the Green Wave we saw in 2019, or is the doom mongering exaggerated or overblown? VS: I think it's very much exaggerated. If you look at the quality of the group, especially, we have a lot of very strong politicians, [some of them] former ministers. And I'm pretty sure that the Greens can be a valuable part of the pro-European coalition. I hope that's going to happen. ...

A group of older Swiss women who won a landmark case at the European Court of Human Rights on climate change are urging their government to fully comply with the judgment. In April, the court ruled in favour of an association of more than 2,000 women, known as the KlimaSeniorinnen, stating for the first time that insufficient government inaction to tackle greenhouse gas emissions is a breach of human rights. It was seen as a historic decision, not only in Europe but around the world. Swiss politicians fought the case from the startHowever, there was resistance within Switzerland from the start...

The government should encourage Hongkongers to reduce food waste at source while also promoting recycling, the founder of environmental group The Green Earth has said. “By letting the public understand both ways to deal with waste, then the outcome, the effect, will be much better,” Edwin Lau of The Green Earth said on government-backed broadcaster RTHK’s Hong Kong Today programme on Thursday. Lau’s comments came after the issue of food waste recycling was raised in the Legislative Council. Responding to questions asked by lawmaker Dennis Leung on Wednesday, Secretary for Environment and Ecolo...
