The eastern German coal-mining region of Lusatia is receiving backing from the European Commission for its transformation into a model region for an economy without greenhouse gases. During a visit on Friday, EU Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton praised the region's application to become the first "net-zero valley" in Europe and pledged: The European Commission is ready to support this project, Breton said. A municipal alliance in Lusatia applied for status as a model region in March. The basis for this is the so-called net-zero industry law at European level, which involves the rapid intro...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden's government on Thursday announced a plan to end coal leases in the Powder River Basin, the nation's largest coal-producing region, drawing condemnation from the mining sector and praise from environmentalists. It comes as the world's second largest economy continues its shift away from coal, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, which has seen its output decline by more than 25 percent since 2017 as it struggles to compete with lower cost natural gas and with renewable energy. Biden has also targeted coal power plants with tough new rules requiring them...

Eleven other miners were rescued earlier from the mine with various injuries, and nine of them remain hospitalized. Rescuers were still searching for one miss...

Slovakia stopped production at its last coal-fired power plant this week. Its electricity will now come almost entirely from nuclear and renewable sources. The Vojany power station, located in the Michalovce district in eastern Slovakia, opened in 1966. Slovenské elektrárne, the company that owns the plant, announced that all of the electricity generated in the Eastern European country will be free of direct CO2 as of June 2024. Slovakia originally slated its coal phaseout for 2030 but has now expedited this to mid-2024, when it will join Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Portugal as a coal-free co...

Paris (AFP) - The world's top management consultancy McKinsey & Company is using its position as a key advisor to the UN's COP28 climate talks to push the interests of its big oil and gas clients, undermining efforts to end the use of the fossil fuels driving global warming, according to multiple sources and leaked documents. Behind closed doors, the US-based firm has proposed future energy scenarios to the agenda setters of the summit that are at odds with the climate goals it publicly espouses, an AFP investigation has found. An "energy transition narrative" drafted by the firm and obtained ...
