Joker: Folie à Deuxjust debuted its first trailer, featuring the return of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and the debut of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. This franchise is set in its own separate DC universe, with no other superheroes or villains — at least that we know of so far. But that doesn’t mean the film isn’t indebted to the long history of DC Comics, or that it doesn’t contain references to other movies — especially Hollywood musicals from the Golden Age. For a look at all those references, check out our latest ScreenCrush video, which picks apart the Joker: Folie à Deux trailer, explains what th...

This is not a joke: The Joker sequel is a full-blown musical. The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deuxis here, and it confirms that the film will feature a Joker (once again played by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix) with a song in his heart. He will be joined by Lady Gaga, who will play this Joker’s version of his star-crossed love, Harley Quinn. Also returning from the first film is Todd Phillips, Joker’s co-writer and director. The trailer shows Joker and Harley falling in love in a mental institution, and using music and dance to seemingly escape from the horrors of their incarceration. Half...

Joker: Folie à Deuxhas received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association fo America. The DC Comics sequel will be rated R for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.” (Nudity that is somehow “brief” and “full” feels like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? It’s like a contradiction of terms.) If you look at the MPAA’s official ratings website, you can see the movie’s full description there now. For sake of comparison, the first Joker film from director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix was rated R for “strong bloody violence, disturbing behav...

Warner Bros. has released the first poster for Joker: Folie à Deux — and also revealed when we’ll get the first trailer for the movie. In a Facebook post, Warners revealed that much-anticipated sequel will debut its teaser one week from today, on Tuesday, April 9. The movie reunites co-writer/director Todd Phillips with star (and Oscar winner) Joaquin Phoenix from the original Joker, which became a shockingly huge smash in the fall of 2019, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide, despite it not containing Joker’s famous arch-nemesis Batman, or any other major DC Comics superheroes. The sequel...

They said they were going to make a whole TV show about Colin Farrell’s Penguin from The Batman. And, well, they really did it. The first teaser for The Penguin is here, and it confirms that yes, this is an entire TV show based around Farrell’s scheming mob boss Oswald Cobblepot. In The Batman, he was one of several DC villains making life miserable for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. Here, he gets the spotlight in his own spinoff that also stars Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen. Take a look at the first teaser...

James Gunn’s Superman is going to be shot in IMAX. Gunn himself confirmed that interesting tidbit in response to a fan question on Threads. After sharing footage from the movie’s European locations, Gunn confirmed that “the whole movie is shot in IMAX.” In recent years, the large-scale format has become the shooting style of choice for many blockbuster filmmakers. And Superman will not even be the first Superman movie shot at least partially in IMAX; Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice contained sequences shot with IMAX 65mm cameras. (So did Wonder Woman 1984.) Blue Beetle and Aqu...

For DC movie dorks and ’90s kids, one of the biggest highlights of last weekend’s Oscars was the presentation of the Best Visual Effects award, which became an extended gag about Batman featuring the presenters, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, and their shared onscreen nemesis: Batman — as played in the Tim Burton Batman movies by Michael Keaton. After joking about their common onscreen history as Batman villains (DeVito as Penguin, Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze) they started taunting Keaton, seated in the audience, while he played along, sneering at them and even giving them a “come ge...

James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is not happening. That’s because the movie — which is officially in production as of today, February 29 — now has a new name. From now on, it is just Superman. Gunn posted a photo to his Instagram account revealing the news, writing “overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.” “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy,” he added. “ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title w...

It’s obvious to any fan that superhero movies had a rough 2023. But even the studios making these movies are now admitting that comic-book movies may be in a bit of trouble. For example, during Warner Bros.’ quarterly earnings call this week, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CFO, Gunnar Wiedenfels gave a less-than-bullish description of the company’s recent film output. He said, via Variety… On the film side, obviously this is going to continue to be a hit-driven business. Just last year was a great example, with the greatest success in the film studio’s history, and some real challenges across the in...
