Def Leppard are giving fans a sneak peek at their upcoming single “Just Like ‘73.” “Light up the fuel. Just Like 73. Hotline Now Open,” declares a message from the band on social media (Def Leppard, it should be noted, didn’t form until ’76). The post is accompanied by a pair of phone numbers – one for the U.S., another for the U.K. Fans who call the hotline are greeted with a recorded message, followed by a short snippet of “Just Like ‘73.” The teaser is certainly enough to get Def Leppard fans excited. Backed by a propulsive backbeat, Joe Elliott can be heard singing what appears to be the t...

Joe Elliott released a short impassioned video after discovering that some Def Leppard fans had been scammed out of money by someone impersonating the singer online. The singer interrupted a demo recording session to plead with people to think carefully before assuming messages from out of the blue were real, and condemned the environment in which it’s happening more and more often. “A friend of mine just emailed me with another one of these ‘have you seen this one’ fake Joe Elliott emails, where somebody has successfully scammed money out of some of our fans,” he said in the clip below. Def Leppard came to realize that they were into something different. [The] New Wave of British Heavy Metal, a lot of it wasn’t very professional and a lot of it wasn’t very deep, guitarist Phil Collen told UCR recently. When producer Mutt Lange started working with Def Leppard, he pushed them hard. “How come you take so long doing these songs,” Collen recalled someone asking Lange, in the Hysteria period. “So you’ll be talking about it in 30 years,” came the reply. Now more than 40 years on, Lange has been proven correct, time and time again, when it comes to 1983’s Pyromania, his second colla...

Joe Elliott has spent more than 40 years as the frontman of Def Leppard, but the singer believes he was only handed the job because his bandmates felt sorry for him. During an appearance on The Rockonteurs podcast, Elliott detailed how the fledgling Def Leppard came together. “It was (guitarist) Pete Willis, (bassist) Rick Savage and Tony Kenning was the original drummer,” Elliott recalled, noting that the band’s priority at the time was finding a rehearsal space. The group eventually set up shop in a closed factory that had previously manufactured silverware. “This was a real Victorian dump h...

Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott has defended his band against accusations they use backing tracks during their concerts. During a conversation with Stereogum, the singer addressed rumors that Def Leppard’s performances are technologically enhanced. “I don’t normally comment on this kind of stuff, but a friend of mine just sent me some link to something on YouTube, a recent posting by, forgive me, I don’t know his name, Chuck something from Testament, I think it is, and Chris Holmes accusing us of using backing tracks,” Elliott explained. “I don’t get angry at this. I’m flattered because their...

Pyromania was the album that changed everything for Def Leppard. Guitarist Phil Collen vividly remembers the rapid ascent that happened after their third album was released in January of 1983. “We were little kids, really, still basically living with our moms and dads,” he tells UCR now. “All of the sudden, you do this whole thing, go around the world and then you revisit it again. It’s really special, actually.” 41 years later, the “again” part of it all is the upcoming Pyromania 40 box set, which will be released April 26, featuring previously unreleased tracks, live footage and an extensive...
