Rain is falling consistently in Barcelona for the first time in almost four years. Catalonia’s longest drought since records began is coming to an end, bringing the first ‘normal’ spring and much-needed respite as the tourist season begins. As the reservoirs fill past their previously critically low condition, many hundreds of thousands of festival goers will fly to Barcelona in May for Primavera Sound. It is one of the largest music festivals in all of Europe. As it begins its two-week run, Primavera Sound is the gunshot marking the beginning of the summer season which sees tourists flock to ...

Europe was around seven per cent wetter than average in 2023 - during the world’s hottest year on record. Hot air retains more moisture, which increases precipitation and can cause widespread flooding. One third of rivers across Europe breached a ‘high’ flood threshold last year, according to the EU climate agency’s latest report. In some areas, fuller rivers strengthened the hand of one renewable: hydropower. Potential for run-of-river hydropower generation was above average across much of Europe for the year as a whole, Copernicus says. With this form of hydropower, a portion of the river is...

In the last six months of 2023, only 150 millimetres of rain fell on Sicily, the Italian island that is twice the size of some countries. A few months later, the region's government declared a state of emergency due to the drought. Experts warned it could be the third worst water crisis the island has ever seen. With swathes of the population, and the economy, reliant on agriculture, a lack of water is has widespread consequences. Climate change is leaving many parts of southern Europe in drought - is it solely to blame for Sicily's water crisis? Or is the chronic lack of funding southern Ital...

The Catalonia region is set to ease restrictions on water use for a wide area, including its capital Barcelona, after recent rainfall palliated a prolonged drought, authorities have announced. In February, Catalonia declared a drought emergency when its reservoirs fell to under 16 per cent capacity after nearly three years of below-average rainfall. Steady rain in recent weeks, however, has boosted reserves to nearly 25 per cent. Spain's reservoirs overall are at a far more promising 66 per cent full. The loosened restrictions mean that some 6 million people will now see individual use limits ...

The climate phenomenon known as El Niño - and not climate change - was a key driver in low rainfall that disrupted shipping at the Panama Canal last year, scientists said Wednesday. A team of international scientists found that El Niño, a natural warming of the central Pacific that changes weather worldwide, doubled the likelihood of the low precipitation Panama received during last year's rainy season. That dryness reduced water levels at the reservoir which feeds freshwater to the Panama Canal and provides drinking water for more than half of the Central American country. Human-caused climat...

Desperate Mexican villagers are taking direct action on commercial avocado farms that are drying up streams while a severe drought drags on. Rivers and even whole lakes are disappearing in the once green and lush state of Michoacan, in the mountains west of Mexico City. Drought has combined with a surge in the use of water for the country’s lucrative export crops, led by avocados. In recent days, subsistence farmers and activists from the Michoacan town of Villa Madero organised teams to go into the mountains and rip out illegal water pumps and breach unlicensed irrigation holding ponds. A pot...

Australia’s weather bureau has said the El Niño weather event has now ended as temperatures appear to have “cooled substantially” in the last week. The naturally occurring phenomenon began in June last year bringing warmer waters to the surface of the Pacific Ocean. March was the tenth month in a row where the world set a new monthly record for heat, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. While climate scientists attribute most of the heat to human-caused climate change, they say the consecutive records aren’t exactly surprising given the strong El Niño conditions. Temperatur...

Oil slicks in the Khabur River in Syria, a major tributary of the Euphrates, have left agriculture “almost impossible” according to one farmer in Hasakah. For the past two months, Riyadh Al-Aswad has been desperately struggling to keep his wheat crop alive long enough for the harvest season. He is not alone in his plight as hundreds of other farmers across the northeast grapple with the pollution. The oil spills, which first appeared in February, were blamed on Türkiye after its military conducted a series of airstrikes on Kurdish-affiliated oil refineries in northeastern Syria. “Since the att...

Spain’s drought-stricken region of Catalonia will install a floating desalination plant to help the city of Barcelona guarantee its drinking water supply, regional authorities said Thursday. Barcelona already relies on Europe’s largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Catalonia's regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region. Now Spain’s second-largest city will get a temporary second desalination plant in its port late...

Spain’s drought-stricken northeastern Catalonia is considering imposing water restrictions on tourists in the driest parts of the region if domestic consumption is not curtailed, the Catalan government said on Tuesday. The restriction of 100 litres per tourist per day for hotels would go into effect if a municipality fails to keep domestic water use by residents below established limits for three consecutive months under the current 'drought emergency' for Catalonia, officials said. Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city and the regional capital, uses 160 litres of water per resident per day -...
