"We're going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs," former President Donald Trump said in November 2022 as he launched his 2024 presidential campaign, "to receive the death penalty for their heinous acts." That promise was not an offhand remark; it has been core to Trump's platform. Which made one of his comments yesterday at the Libertarian National Convention all the more interesting. "I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht," he said, referring to the man serving two life sentences plus 40 years for a slew of convictions, including distributing narcotics. Ul...

Washington (AFP) - A top assassin in Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel was extradited Saturday to the United States, the head of the Department of Justice said, where he will face charges linked to drug smuggling, murder and torture. Nestor Isidro Perez Salas, known as "El Nini," was one of the Sinaloa Cartel's "lead sicarios, or assassins, and was responsible for the murder, torture and kidnapping of rivals and witnesses who threatened the cartel's criminal drug trafficking enterprise," US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement after the extradition Saturday morning. "We also allege ...

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Donald Trump attacked Joe Biden from the left on drug policy and criminal justice, slamming him for pushing harsh laws that had disproportionately hurt black people. Trump is trying that same tack again this time around, portraying Biden as a racist eager to lock up African Americans. "We must not forget that it was Joe Biden who was a key figure in passing the 1994 Crime Bill, which disproportionately harmed Black communities through harsh sentencing laws and increased incarceration rates," Janiyah Thomas, the Trump campaign's "black media director," sai...

More than 200 kilograms of cocaine has been seized by Greek police in the harbour city of Piraeus. Police said on Thursday that the cocaine was hidden in a refrigerated container loaded with shrimp from a South American country. Four men aged between 36 and 64 were taken into custody. The Greek investigators were put on the trail of the drug gang by a tip-off from the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Before their arrest, the gang had made around €5 million ($5.4 million) from their trafficking, the police said. The market value of the cocaine seized is estimated by experts at around €500,00...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's administration formally proposed on Thursday reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, a historic shift that would bring federal policy more in line with public opinion. "No one should be in jail merely for using or possessing marijuana. Period," Biden said in a video statement. "Far too many lives have been upended because of a failed approach to marijuana and I'm committed to righting those wrongs." Marijuana has been classified since 1970 as a so-called Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) -- the same level as with her...

European ministers are meeting with South American counterparts today (7 May) in Hamburg, Germany, as Europe faces up to spiraling drug-related violence. Major European ports are clubbing together after the European Commission described a surge in cocaine imports as one of the most serious security threats facing the continent. “We must make our deep-sea ports so safe that they can no longer be gateways for tons of cocaine,” German interior minister Nancy Faeser said in a post on X ahead of the meeting, calling for greater international cooperation against cartels. The ministerial meeting incl...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's administration is set to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, an official said Tuesday -- a historic shift that would bring federal policy more in line with public opinion. The US attorney general sent a proposal to the White House on Tuesday to "reclassify marijuana," Justice Department spokesperson Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement. It comes after Biden became the first president to initiate a federal review into the matter, in 2022. The issue is seen as a potential vote winner for Biden as he faces Republican Donald Trump in a tough e...
