Presidential elections are being held on Wednesday in North Macedonia, a small Balkan country that has orbited the European Union for nearly two decades with little to show for its efforts to join the 27-nation bloc. A second round of voting is almost certain to follow on May 8 - coinciding with parliamentary elections - as no candidate is expected to exceed the 50% threshold required for outright victory. Seven candidates are running for the largely ceremonial position, with the brief campaigning period focusing on EU accession, the rule of law, fighting corruption and reducing poverty. The l...

Voters have begun heading to the polls in the Basque Country. Both the EH Bildu party - descending from the political wing of the terrorist group ETA - and the PNV are predicted to need backing from the Basque Socialist Party (PSE) to garner enough votes to rule in the 75-seat regional Parliament. When, in January, the EU Commission appointed German Christian Democrat MEP Markus Pieper for a new position as a small business envoy, it sparked an outcry. The reason: Markus Pieper scored worse than other candidates for the plum position with almost 19.000 euros per month. The recruitment drew accusations of cronyism, as Pieper belongs to the same political party as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Four fellow Commissioners protested in writing, and the European Parliament in a landslide vote asked von der Leyen to rescind the hire. This week, on what should have been his first da...

Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova, is a staunch supporter of the European path, but she also has many opponents, and public opinion is divided. Turkey is holding local elections on Sunday that will decide who gets to control Istanbul and other key cities. The main battlegrounds are the country's economic hub of Istanbul and the capital of Ankara, both of which Erdogan lost in 2019, shattering his aura of invincibility. The 70-year-old Turkish president has set his sights on wresting back Istanbul, a city of 16 million people, where he was born and raised, and where he began his political career as mayor in 1994. A strong showing for Erdogan’s ruling Islamic-oriented Justice and Development Party, or AKP, would likely harden his resolv...

The Constitutional Court in Belgium has ruled that 17 and 16-year-olds must vote in European elections on 9 June. Voting in Belgium is obligatory for adults 18 and older, with failure to do so resulting in a fine. Adults who fail to turn up at polling stations at least four times in a 15-year period risk losing their right to vote. Those under 18 were previously exempt from this obligatory voting requirement, however. But now the country's court has suspended the provision that only made voting mandatory for adults. The ruling means that youngsters can be sanctioned if they fail to turn out. A...

From Friday to Sunday, Russian voters will head to the polls to choose the country’s next president – but the result is not expected to deliver any surprise. There’s little doubt among international observers that Vladimir Putin, who’s running for his fifth six-year term, will come out victorious. Many of his opponents have been silenced, imprisoned or driven to exile, none have been permitted to stand against him, and independent media outlets that could show criticism of his policies have been blocked. A victory for the incumbent president would mean that Putin is likely to remain in power u...

The rise of the populist party, Chega, in Sunday's vote has brought the hard right to the forefront of Portuguese politics. With the outcome hanging in the balance, the competition between two major moderate parties remains undecided as they await crucial results from overseas voters. Official results are expected to be released within two weeks. The remarkable ascent of Chega, a party just five years old, is evident in its increa...
