Spain’s drought-stricken region of Catalonia will install a floating desalination plant to help the city of Barcelona guarantee its drinking water supply, regional authorities said Thursday. Ten regions of Kazakhstan have declared states of emergency after strong floods hit the entire northwest of the country. The flooding was sparked by a sudden and early period of warm weather that caused huge amounts of snow to melt and overfill numerous rivers across parts of Kazakhstan and Russia. Lava from a volcanic eruption in Iceland flowed Sunday toward defences around the town of Grindavik, which have so far held the molten rock back from the evacuated community.
