The European Court of Auditors says the European Commission is not moving fast enough to recover EU money that is not spent in accordance with the regulations. EU auditors said, in a report published on Tuesday, that often more than a year or more passes between the end of subsidized measures and the recovery of funds. A further three to five months elapsed before the funds were reimbursed, the report added. In up to 8% of cases, claims are even waived completely. However, the commission ensures that irregular expenditure is recorded accurately and quickly, the report said. Some 4.2% of the EU...

France is calling for faster progress on a capital markets union in the EU. Long-term European investment products should be created for consumers, which would channel private assets into European investments instead of abroad, a position paper presented by the French Economy Ministry said on Thursday. While households in the EU have savings assets of some €35,000 billion ($37,000 billion), often these wind up being invested in foreign funds, the paper said. That means foreign countries benefit from the added value created by European companies. Savers should be given attractive investment opp...

The Council of Europe, a European rights body, has sharply criticized the United Kingdom for its controversial asylum pact with Rwanda. "The United Kingdom government should refrain from removing people under the Rwanda policy and reverse the Bill's effective infringement of judicial independence," said the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O'Flaherty, in Strasbourg on Tuesday. The law raises questions about the human rights of asylum seekers and the rule of law in general, he said. The Council of Europe is independent of the EU and was founded in 1949 to protect democ...

This is the highest price since the beginning of January. Over the past week the price of natural gas has risen by more than 20%, making up for the price decline in the first few months of the year. One reason for the rise is investors' fear of a new war in the Middle East and the potential impact on gas supplies from...

It is the most massive stellar black hole known to date in our galaxy, the European Southern Observatory (ESO), based near the German city of Munich, announced on Tuesday. The previously largest known - Cygnus X-1 - has about 21 solar masses. "No one was expecting to find a high-mass black hole lurking nearby, undetected so far," ...
