By Tim Peeler One of the first things NC State associate head coach Chris Hart did when he was elevated from director of baseball operations to full-time assistant and recruiting coordinator was change the way the program scouted and approached its potential recruits. He wanted the Wolfpack to get involved earlier in the process, to identify players with long-range potential in their high school freshman and sophomore years, something longtime coach Elliott Avent was not on board with at the time. “Looking around the country, we were behind in early recruiting,” Hart says. “We needed to go rec...

By Noah Fleischman OMAHA, Neb. — The last time NC State left Charles Schwab Field, the site of the Men’s College World Series, the Wolfpack didn’t exit on its own accord. The Pack, which was 2-1 in the 2021 iteration of the tournament at the time of its premature departure, had to leave Omaha due to COVID-19 protocols within the program. The NCAA sent the team home, even though it played competitively against Vanderbilt with 13 players on the active roster. That bitter taste still lives in the Wolfpack’s mouth three years later. Most of that roster is gone, but NC State is back on college base...

By Ethan McDowell NC State football might have finalized its 2024 roster during the past week. The Wolfpack secured three transfer portal commitments from three visitors, addressing multiple positions of need with veteran players who can make an instant impact. Akron safety Kerry Martin Jr., Colorado defensive lineman Chazz Wallace and Ohio State safety Ja’Had Carter are all expected to make their moves to Raleigh this week and officially join the program for its first summer session. Class of 2025 three-star safety Tristan Teasdell also committed to the Pack earlier this month. TheWolfpacker....

By Noah Fleischman NC State junior forward Ernest Ross is back. He entered the transfer portal in April, later committed to UTSA, but the 6-foot-9 big man announced he was returning to NC State on Wednesday morning via social media. The Wolfpack has now filled all 13 scholarships for the 2024-25 season with Ross’ decision to rejoin NC State. A former four-star recruit, Ross played in 13 games and scored 4 total points during the Wolfpack’s 2023-24 campaign. He finished the year 2-for-11 from the field, including 0-for-8 from three. Ross, a joyful presence in the locker room, provided key moral...

By Ethan McDowell NC State football will play non-conference games against Virginia in 2025 and 2026, the program announced Wednesday morning. The conference rivals will compete twice in contests that do not count toward the ACC title race, and the dates have yet to be determined. Last year, the league released its new scheduling model that established NC State’s conference opponents for the next seven seasons through 2030. The Wolfpack and Cavaliers were not scheduled to play against each other until 2027. Now, NC State will face off against its fellow ACC member school in a pair of non-leagu...

By Noah Fleischman During the early part of the season, NC State sophomore closer Derrick Smith was searching for consistency. He didn’t allow an earned run through his first three appearances — 1.2 innings in total — and then suffered a rocky five-run inning against Boston College in mid-March. Smith was in a new role for the first time with the Wolfpack: he was pitching every week. As he was getting comfortable in his new spot in the Pack’s bullpen, Smith did not have full control of his slider. That, in turn, made him a one-pitch arm, and the Eagles smashed a pair of homers in that lone inn...

By Noah Fleischman NC State’s men’s basketball coaching staff appears to be complete. The Wolfpack is set to hire UMass assistant coach Brett Nelson, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday night. Nelson brings a vast array of experience to the Wolfpack coaching staff, coaching at both mid-majors and at the Power Conference level. Nelson spent the past year with the Minutemen, where he assisted in guiding the team to a 20-11 record (11-7 Atlantic 10). Before he made the trek to Amherst, Mass., Nelson was the head coach at Holy Cross for four seasons. During his time at the helm of the Cru...

By Greg Pickel Penn State coach James Franklin said a month ago that Abdul Carter brought the idea of changing his position to the Lions staff after the 2023 season ended. They were agreeable to moving the All-Big Ten defender from linebacker to defensive end. So, they did. Throughout the 15 spring practices that took place between mid-March and Saturday’s Blue-White game, the 11th-year head coach of the Nittany Lions frequently praised the transition. Carter, though, had not been available to talk about it. That changed following a 27-0 win for Team White over Team Blue, which featured a lot ...
