Tour guide Kham Dee gestures towards the deceptively idyllic landscape of Xieng Khouang province in north-eastern Laos and says that everything, from oil lamps, cowbells and cooking pots, is made from bombs. As visitors arrive at Ban Napia, dubbed the "war spoon village," the significance of his words unfolds with striking clarity. Fragments of cluster bombs, rusty rocket launchers, stacks of grenades or artillery fire, even the wing of a military aeroplane lean against the walls of houses. The remains of the weapons are melted down and turned into useful items such as as spoons. The so-called...

The Khumbu Icefall is one of the most dangerous stages of the route up Mount Everest, a huge mass of giant blocks of ice that move slowly towards the valley. But climbers must cross it if they are to reach the peak. They manage thanks to icefall doctors who install networks of ladders and ropes at the site and adjust them time and again throughout the season as the ice shifts, often at great personal risk. Experienced icefall doctors can see at a glance how safe the ice is "just like a mother can tell what's wrong with her child when she sees it," one told dpa. In one of the latest compelling ...

Ngima Gyalzen Sherpa, a Nepalese mountain guide, still feels a chill in his heart when he remembers the moment he slipped and fell into a crevasse on Mount Everest, the highest summit in the world, in the spring of 2022. The Khumbu Icefall is one of the most dangerous passages on Everest. It is a huge mass of giant blocks of ice that move slowly but steadily towards the valley and which climbers have to overcome on their ascent to the peak. First-time visitors to the vast open area in the middle of Berlin often need a minute to take it all in. Stretching out before their eyes is a disused airfield that was constructed by the Nazis in the German capital's Tempelhof district long ago. After the former airport was shut down in 2008, the site was converted into the city's largest public park. Where once planes took off, skaters and cyclists now speed along the two runways. Due to its vastness, Tempelholfer Feld (Tempelhofer Field) as the locals call it, is a popular spot for flying kites. Designated areas for barbecuing, which is pro...

There’s a broken link in the food chain of California’s brown pelicans, adding a sad chapter to one of conservation’s most striking success stories. Emaciated birds are turning up in California’s ponds, reservoirs, backyards and even San Francisco’s Oracle Park during a baseball game — far from their wild ocean home. Wildlife centers are inundated with the gangly, prehistoric-looking seabirds, nursing them back to health with fluids, fish and medications, but the cost is a staggering $1,500 per bird. Injuries can easily double the cost. “They’re feathered skeletons,” said Rebecca Duerr, direct...

Lina Yamin and six other musicians found themselves breathing heavily as they held back tears while performing Monday for a special crowd. The 33-year-old from Venezuela said the musicians, most of whom come from other countries themselves, tried to keep it together as they played a concert for a room of recently arrived migrants. “When you’re away from home playing music, it makes you miss a lot of things. It makes you remember a lot of things,” she said. The concert was held in the auditorium of a migrant shelter at the American Islamic College on Memorial Day. The music was comforting to ma...
