For more than a decade, patients who've needed certain controlled medications have suffered from ill-advised, untenable policies the U.S. government has instituted, allegedly to mitigate the ever-surging numbers of drug overdose deaths. These policies have been a dismal failure on multiple fronts: Not only have deaths continued to surge, but the terrifying intrusion of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) into the practice of medicine has had a chilling effect on patients and their physicians. As the DEA relentlessly tightens production quotas on medications for pain and ADHD, it has begu...

Bags of fentanyl were found at a New York City day care after the death of one child. The drugs, later discovered by authorities, were stored under a play mat where the kids napped during the day. The operator of the day care, Grei Mendez, 36, is currently in custody along with her tenant and cousin-in-law, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41. On September 15, the sick children were discovered by Mendez when she realized that they were not waking up from their naps. Instead of immediately calling authorities though, Mendez attempted to cover up the drugs and called her husband and Brito’s cousin, who r...

Washington (AFP) - The US Justice Department took aim at the four sons of notorious Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and their Chinese chemical suppliers Friday in a new crackdown on deadly fentanyl. In five linked cases filed in three federal courts, the Justice Department named the "Chapitos" and the Sinaloa Cartel they inherited from their now-imprisoned father as the primary source of the synthetic opioid now blamed for hundreds of overdose deaths every day across the country. Washington (AFP) - US law enforcement seized more than enough fentanyl to kill all Americans in 2022, the Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday, underscoring the deep threat of the deadly man-made opioid. The DEA said it had captured 50.6 million fake prescription pills laced with fentanyl and 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder during the year, calling it the equivalent of "more than 379 million potentially deadly doses." The DEA said fentanyl, which caused only a fraction of overdose deaths a decade ago, is now the "deadliest drug threat facing this country." "It is a highly addictive ma...

Virginia Beach (United States) (AFP) - Makayla Cox, a high school student in the US state of Virginia, thought she was taking medication that her friend had procured to treat pain and anxiety. Instead, the pill she took two weeks after her sixteenth birthday was fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin. It killed her almost instantly. After watching a movie -- a prequel to "Harry Potter" -- with her mother Shannon one evening in January, Makayla appeared fine as she headed to her bedroom with her husky dog that often slept on her bed. But when Shannon entered Makayla's roo...
