Houston (AFP) - Gusty weekend winds were threatening to worsen a million-acre wildfire that has already killed two people in the southern US, as a monster blizzard engulfed California's mountains Friday. Fires are burning across northern Texas and neighboring Oklahoma, fueled by an unseasonably warm winter and ferocious winds. After a slight dousing of rain that brought limited reprieve to firefighters on Thursday as they sought to get a handle on the out-of-control blazes, danger was forecast for Saturday. "Critical fire weather conditions are expected to return midday Saturday and once again...

Wildfires swept across the Texas Panhandle early on Wednesday, causing evacuations, power outages and the shutdown of a nuclear weapons facility. Strong winds, dry grass and unseasonably warm temperatures continue to feed the blazes, which show no sign of stopping. An unknown number of homes and other buildings in Hutchinson County were damaged or destroyed, local emergency officials said. The main facility that assembles and disassembles America's nuclear arsenal shut down its operations Tuesday night. "We have evacuated our personnel, non-essential personnel from the site, just in an abundan...

Meanwhile firefighters and police have begun examining the interior of the two residential towers that were destroyed by fire in the Spanish city as questions rose about how the fire spread so rapidly. Valencia's Mayor María José Catalá said that the danger of the 14-story building collapsing and the intense heat from the fire initially prevented emergency workers from getting in to search for any survivors. The fire started on Thursday evening, it's not yet known how, and quickly engulfed the buildings. Experts said that the building's polyurethane cladding may have contributed to the fire's ...
