Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar on Sunday won the Giro d'Italia by a wide margin in his first attempt. The 25-year-old finished almost 10 minutes ahead Daniel Martinez of Colombia in the final overall standings. Third place went to Welshman Geraint Thomas, who climbed onto the podium one day after his 38th birthday. The final 21st stage was won by Belgian Tim Merlier. The 16th Giro d'Italia stage on Tuesday was shortnened after riders agreed they didn't want to cross the Umbrail pass due to wintery weather. The riders union CPA said that attempting the pass in cold temperatures and a 95% chance of snowfall poses a "significant health risk, especially in the descent" and is not in line with extreme weather regulations of the ruling body UCI. Belgian cycling star Wout van Aert will not race in next month's Giro d'Italia due to injuries sustained in a crash two weeks ago. Van Aert broke his collarbone, sternum and ribs in a high speed crash at the Across Flanders semi classic on March 27.
