Earlier this year, President Emmanuel Macron brought in huge budget cuts to curb France’s exorbitant spending. In February, €10 billion in cuts were announced, in addition to a €16 billion drop in spending that the 2024 budget had already accounted for. While much of the budget cuts have been aimed – controversially – at environmental and medical transport, one of the key areas facing cuts is also the culture sector. Economy minister Bruno Le Maire has announced that France’s culture sector will have its annual budget slashed by €204 million, with the main area to be cut in “artistic creation”...

Having a safe climate is becoming more of a human right globally with this week's European court decision that says countries must better protect people from climate change, something warming-hit residents of the Global South long knew, said former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. Robinson, who was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, praised Tuesday’s mixed court decision as precedent-setting and change-triggering. The European Court of Human Rights sided with Swiss senior women saying their government wasn't doing enough to protect them from climate shocks, but dismissed...

The Social Democratic Party has won Portugal’s general election by a slender margin and is set to form a minority government. Results published late Wednesday gave the Democratic Alliance a final tally of 80 seats in the 230-seat National Assembly, Portugal’s parliament. The centre-left Socialist Party placed second with 78 seats and has said it won’t stand in the way of the Democratic Alliance forming a minority government in an upcoming parliamentary vote. The hard-right Chega party (Enough) collected 50 seats, up from 12 in a 2022 election. This is a staggering surge that upends traditional...

Haitian politicians started pursuing new alliances Wednesday, seeking a coalition that could lead the country out of the gang violence that has fuelled lawlessness, closed the main airport and prevented embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry from returning home. One new political alliance involves former rebel leader Guy Philippe and ex-presidential candidate and senator Moïse Jean Charles, who told Radio Caraïbes on Wednesday that they signed a deal to form a three-person council to lead Haiti. Philippe, a key figure in the 2004 rebellion that ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, ret...

It looks like the French government has got some "beef" with plant-based meat labels. They've recently issued a decree prohibiting the use of terms traditionally associated with meat, such as "steak," on the labels of vegetarian products. Other terms like "escalope," "ham," "filet," and "prime rib" can also no longer be used. The decision comes in response to longstanding concerns raised by the meat industry regarding the potential confusion caused by terms like "vegetarian ham" or "vegan sausage" among consumers. Spain is banning some short-haul domestic flights as part of its plan to reduce carbon emissions. Flights with a rail alternative that takes less than two and a half hours will no longer be allowed, “except in cases of connection with hub airports that link with international routes”. The restriction is part of an agreement made in Congress by Spain’s coalition government. The country has been considering a ban since 2021 as part of its 2050 climate action plan. It comes after the French government officially banned domestic flights for journeys that can be made in less than two and a half hou...
