Washington (AFP) - A second case of bird flu has been found in a human, US health authorities announced Wednesday, less then two months after the first one as an outbreak of the disease circulates widely among dairy cows. Both individuals infected with the virus called H5N1 -- the first in Texas, the second in Michigan -- were dairy farm workers who suffered only minor symptoms and have recovered, according to authorities. Despite the second infection, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said its risk assessment for the general public remained "low," but it did suggest it expects...

Microplastics have crossed so many boundaries it is hard to keep track. The ‘red flag’ of our consumptive lifestyles, they have reached the limits of the Earth - from the Mariana Trench to the tip of Mount Everest. These tiny particles of decomposed plastic have seeped into clouds, and been found buried in archaeological remains believed to be ‘pristine’. They have challenged our ideas of bodily inviolability too, infiltrating every organ. What might have been considered the ‘purest’ parts of human life - placentas, babies, breast milk - contain microplastics. So it comes as little surprise th...

A final inquiry report detailing what happened in the UK's infected blood scandal in the 1970s and 1980s will be published on Monday. Around 3,000 people are believed to have died as a result of being infected with HIV and hepatitis from blood transfusions during what's seen as the deadliest scandal to afflict Britain's state-run National Health Service since its inception in 1948. The inquiry report is expected to criticise pharmaceutical firms and medical workers, civil servants and politicians, though many have already died given the passage of time. It's also set to pave the way to a huge ...

Hypertension, which is also known as high blood pressure, is a common condition that affects an estimated one in three people globally, but if left untreated, it can lead to heart attack and stroke. It’s a number that has doubled in the last two decades, with nearly half of people with the condition unaware of it, the World Health Organization (WHO) said last year. “It's a concern because it's a potentially life-threatening condition, and it largely goes unnoticed because when you have high blood pressure, you rarely have any symptoms,” Julie Ward, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart F...
