People with anxiety have twice the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared with their non-anxious peers, according to a large new study in the United Kingdom. Researchers from University College London (UCL) used data for nearly 988,000 patients ages 50 and older from 2008 to 2018 to identify how anxiety affects Parkinson’s risk while accounting for other known factors such as age, sex, social isolation, severe mental illness, dementia, head trauma, and lifestyle. They found that patients who were diagnosed with anxiety for the first time as older adults were twice as likely to go on t...

A British teenager with severe epilepsy has become the first child in the world to receive a brain implant to control his seizures. Doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital fitted a neurostimulator under 13-year-old Oran Knowlson's skull. It sends electrical signals deep into the brain, and has reduced his seizures by around 80 percent. After years of having up to 300 seizures a day, his mum, Justine, said: "I feel like I'm getting my child back a little bit, bit by bit. It's going to take time, but for the first time in ten years, we actually have hope." Three more children will soon ...

Washington (AFP) - The US surgeon general on Tuesday issued a landmark advisory declaring gun violence a "public health crisis" and calling for wide-ranging firearm controls that have historically been quashed by stiff political opposition. The advisory by Vivek Murthy, who was nominated by President Joe Biden, is the first such major report on gun violence from a surgeon general, whose office has limited authority but plays a significant public role in health issues. A similar report on tobacco in the 1960s was a key first step to altering the perception of the substance's danger, ultimately ...

Thirty years ago, the sociologist Craig Reinarman observed.pdf) that there's something "woven into the very fabric of American culture" that makes us susceptible to believing that a "chemical boogeyman" is to blame for "society's ills." He added that every moral panic about drugs since the 19th century has been fueled by "media magnification" in which the danger of a particular substance is dramatized and distorted. Now that recreational marijuana is legal in about half of U.S. states, and more Americans are consuming weed than ever before, the chemical bogeyman is back, and he's armed with a ...

Murthy recommends a range of measures to counteract this, including providing more money for research and s...

Thousands of cases of high blood pressure, diabetes and dementia across Europe could be linked to tiny particles emitted by planes, according to a new study commissioned by campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E). More than 10 per cent of Europe’s total population - 52 million people - live within a 20km radius of the 32 busiest airports in the continent. This means they are particularly exposed to these ultrafine particles (UFPs) emitted by the jet engines of planes that take off and land there. Some studies suggest UFPs may be linked to an increased risk of respiratory diseases, cardiov...

People are more likely to die from alcohol-related issues in Europe than anywhere else, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO). Globally, there were 2.6 million alcohol-related deaths in 2019, a 2.5 per cent decline from 2010 but still “unacceptably high,” Dr Vladimir Poznyak, who heads the alcohol, drugs, and addictive behaviours unit in WHO’s department of mental health and substance use, said during a press conference. The European region had the highest alcohol-related death rate – 52.9 per 100,000, just above Africa’s 52.2 per 100,000 – as well as the world’s h...
