A final inquiry report detailing what happened in the UK's infected blood scandal in the 1970s and 1980s will be published on Monday. Around 3,000 people are believed to have died as a result of being infected with HIV and hepatitis from blood transfusions during what's seen as the deadliest scandal to afflict Britain's state-run National Health Service since its inception in 1948. The inquiry report is expected to criticise pharmaceutical firms and medical workers, civil servants and politicians, though many have already died given the passage of time. It's also set to pave the way to a huge ...

A spa in the United States was the first to be linked to HIV transmission from cosmetic injections, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report last week. Three people were found to be contaminated from "an undetermined source at the spa" in New Mexico in 2018, resulting in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. While it cannot be cured, treatment can bring the virus to undetectable levels, making it a manageable condition. How did Germany run low on potentially life-saving HIV medication? The cluster at the s...

Ryan, a 28-year-old who lives in Berlin, first realised his prescription of PrEP was running low when his doctor advised him to space out his dosage. "I took steps to reduce the number of pills I take, four rather than seven on the advice of my physician. I also have two emergency bottles of PrEP that a friend gave me," he said. Ryan says some of his friends were also changing doses of medication. PrEP is a potentially life-saving medicine that offers protection against contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and consists of drugs used for treating those who have HIV as well. According ...

Researchers have identified new drug candidates that may be able to prevent HIV-infected cells from escaping detection by the immune system. A team from the Univerisity of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the US made the discovery. Current therapy, called antiretroviral therapy, prevents HIV from multiplying which reduces the virus’ amount in the body to an undetectable level but it isn’t a cure. “We have excellent antiretroviral drugs that suppress HIV, but unfortunately, none of them clear the virus. If someone with HIV stops taking their medication, the infection will rebound,” Thomas Smith...
