Barcelona city council has announced a radical plan to rid the city of its roughly 10,000 tourist flat licences over the next five years, according to local media reports. The measure seeks to address the growing national housing crisis, which is particularly acute in touristic cities such as Barcelona. It will prioritise residential over tourist use in one of Europe's most visited cities. The plan reflects a global trend of cities beginning to combat the effects of mass tourism on local life. The public housing unit occupied by the mother of wanted self-exiled activist Nathan Law has been reclaimed by the Hong Kong government. Citing sources, local media outlets reported on Sunday that Law’s mother had been evicted from the subsidised housing unit she rented in Yat Tung estate. Responding to enquiries from HKFP, the Housing Department confirmed on Monday that the unit had been surrendered in June. “According to the records, the unit had earlier fallen into rent arrears, violating the tenancy agreement,” the department said in an emailed Chinese response. “Therefore, our department ...

Spain’s year-on-year inflation report for May was released on Thursday morning, coming in at 3.6%, which was in line with market expectations, according to the National Statistics Institute. However, it was above April’s 3.3%. This was mostly driven by increases in housing inflation, which saw a rise of 1.2 points, clocking in at 5.2%. A significant portion of this was due to electricity prices, which had reduced in May 2023, but spiked in May this year. Transport inflation also increased to 3.8%, boosted by increases in fuel prices, which fell less in May 2024 than in May 2023. Hotels, cafes ...

Around 12,000 reports flagging suspected abuse of public housing resources have been received over the past eight months, a Hong Kong official has said amid a crack down on “rich tenants” in government-subsidised housing. Rosanna Law, director for housing, said on Metro Radio on Sunday that the government had invited around 250,000 tenants who have lived in public housing for over 10 years to participate in a round of self-reports by May 31. Law said around 27 per cent of tenants had completed self-reports as of May 17. Around 300 tenants had contacted the Housing Department to surrender their...

Germany's Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday that 294,400 new apartments were built in Germany last year, a yearly decline of 0.3%. This total was far below the state's target of 400,000 and is bad news for Germany’s struggling property sector. Over the last few years, investment in German construction has been hindered due to high interest rates, red tape, and elevated energy costs because of the Russia’s war in Ukraine. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of apartments completed annually rose from 159,800 to 306,400. Since 2021, growth has been virtually non-existent. "In the fac...
