The European Commission has been urged not to rush through legislation defining when a fuel can be considered ‘low-carbon’, a question that will determine what technologies qualify for policy and financial support, with far-reaching implications for the future of the natural gas industry. Following a political agreement with government delegates late last year, the European Parliament is expected to adopt next week a Gas and Hydrogen Markets Directive, which will give the EU executive one year to answer the complex question of what constitutes a ‘low-carbon’ fuel. One million hectares of land have been earmarked in Morocco for green hydrogen projects, the government announced in a statement on Monday. As part of the first phase, 300,000 hectares will be made available to investors, both foreign and domestic. Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen that has been produced through electrolysis by using renewable energy, rather than relying on electricity generated by fossil fuels. This hydrogen can then be used as a clean energy source, only generating water vapour and heat as byproducts. According to the Moroccan government, hundreds of national and foreign inv...

Calviño pledged the EIB will help build investor confidence for projects in areas such as green hydrogen and battery factories. "Companies have to think twice before undertaking some of the necessary investments," she said. "There is a lot of uncertainty and geopolitical tensions that also limit the tolerable risk for companies. That is why the EIB plays an important role in ...
