The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for installing a floating barrier on the Rio Grande. This marks another effort by GOP officials to stop migrants from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. The state stationed the buoys without notifying the International Boundary and Water Commission or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Justice Department’s filing asks a federal judge to force Texas to remove the 1,000-foot line of buoys and claims that its installation was unlawful. Texas is known for its aggressive border control tactics. The state has put up razor-wire...

U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar blocked a rule that allows immigration authorities to deny asylum to migrants who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border without applying online or seeking protection in another country first. This undercuts a key element of President Joe Biden’s new immigration plan. In May, the Biden administration announced a set of immigration policies that would lift certain border restrictions and maintain others. Biden repealed Title 41, which allowed authorities to expel migrants at the border in an attempt to minimize the spread of Covid-19. He also enacted Title 8, which allow...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has announced an investigation of Florida officials after two flights of migrants were sent to Sacramento from there. The state of California is considering filing possible state-sanctioned kidnapping charges, specifically targeting Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). Newsom’s announcement followed California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s (D-California) proclamation that Florida was responsible for sending a chartered plane full of South American migrants to Sacramento last week, prior to the flight that landed on Monday. The Florida Division of Emergency Management confirme...

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) — who was recently nominated to become the next Speaker when Republicans take control of the House in January — called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, criticizing how he has handled the immigration crisis at the southern border. McCarthy’s remarks come at a moment he’s under pressure from a group of right-wing Republicans pushing him to adopt a more aggressive stance to investigate top officials of President Joe Biden‘s administration. “Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction o...

Former Trump White House Jared Kushner said this week in an interview on Fox News he finds “very troubling” that immigrants are being used as “political pawns.” Kushner commented on the nationwide outrage to the move by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida) to send migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. He did not directly criticize DeSantis but condemned political stunts “one way or the other.” “I personally watch what’s happening and it’s very hard to see at the southern border,” Kushner stated during Fox News’s Outnumber. “We have to remember these are human beings. They’re people. So seeing them bei...

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) got major blowback after sending 50 Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., under false pretenses last week. But the DeSantis has doubled down on his controversial move and promised to send more migrants around the country, in particular to Democratic states and cities. “These are just the beginning efforts,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Daytona Beach, Florida. Recently, the Florida governor tried to send migrants to an airport in Delaware, close in proximity to President Joe Biden’s summer home. The trolling mirrors that by Texas Gov. Greg Abbot...

President Joe Biden confirmed Tuesday that he will more than quadruple the United States’ refugee limit for immigration from 15,00 to 62,500. In April, Biden signed an order that extended the Trump-era cap, but vowed to eventually increase the limit. Biden had pledged to increase the cap during the campaign. “It is important to take this action today to remove any lingering doubt in the minds of refugees around the world who have suffered so much, and who are anxiously waiting for their new lives to begin,” Biden said in a statement Monday. Biden’s words were matched by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D...

During President Joe Biden‘s address to Congress on Wednesday, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) pulled out a space blanket and laid it over her lap. According to a spokesperson for Boebert, the blanket, which drew attention to Boebert because of the noise it made in the middle of the speech, was brought out to highlight the recent flow of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. “President Biden did not address or bring attention to the crisis at our southern border. So Rep. Boebert did,” Boebert’s spokesperson said. Boebert, one of 40 House Republicans present for the speech, tweeted 30 times, sen...

President Joe Biden told reporters Saturday that he will raise Trump-era immigration caps restricting the number of refugees who could enter the United States. Biden signed an order Friday maintaining the Trump-era 15,000-refugee cap on immigration into the United States, saying at the time the cap “remains justified by humanitarian concerns and is otherwise in the national interest.” Biden saw a swift backlash from Democrats and advocacy groups after the announcement with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) calling the choice “unacceptable” in a statement Friday. Biden changed his his position wit...

The lawyers working to reunite immigrant parents with their children separated by the Trump administration reported on Wednesday that they had found the parents of 105 children in the past month. The committee of pro-bono lawyers and advocates working on the reuniting of these families said that it had yet to find the parents of 506 children, down from 611 on January 14, the last time the findings were reported to a federal judge. The parents of about 322 of the 506 children are believed to have been deported, making the search for them more challenging. The lawyers are not required to say how...
