UK inflation has slowed to its lowest level since July 2021, but the decline in April fell short of economists' expectations, raising questions about the likelihood of an imminent interest rate cut by the Bank of England. The Consumer Prices Index rose by 2.3% in April 2024 compared to a year before, down from 3.2% in March. However, this missed the predicted drop to 2.1%, according to data released Wednesday by the Office for National Statistics. The reduction in the annual inflation rate in April 2024 was mainly due to price changes in the housing and household services sector, particularly ...

According to market research firm Kantar, grocery price inflation for the four weeks to 12 May is at its lowest since October 2021. This 2.4% rate of price increases, down from 2.9% in the previous four-week period, is now less than a percentage point away from the average pace in the 10 years before prices started to accelerate in 2021. Coffee prices hardly increased in the EU in March, they inched up by 1% on average, hitting a 32-month-low inflation rate for this category. This compares to the hair-raising pace of growth last March when the commodity jumped by 13.5% in yearly comparison. The inflation rate for coffee has been declining since October 2022, when it was at its highest, reaching 17.4%. Although the increase in coffee prices slowed down in the EU overall, there are significant differences across countries. The highest inflation rates were registered in Croatia where coffee cost 7.4% more than last March. This ra...

Falls Church (United States) (AFP) - "I don't really shop for groceries as often as I used to," said Jasmine Reed, 32, outside a store in northern Virginia, as she explained the impact of higher food prices on her shopping habits. Consumer inflation data published Thursday showed that food prices rose by 2.2 percent in the 12 months to April -- masking some sharp differences between items. Eggs have plummeted by nine percent, according to the Department of Labor data, while the cost of butter jumped by 3.5 percent. Washington (AFP) - US consumer inflation eased slightly last month, according to government data published Wednesday, in a positive sign for President Joe Biden ahead of November's election. The data supports his administration's messaging that the US economy has turned a corner, as it looks to quell consumers' concerns about the impact of rising prices going into an expected rematch against former president Donald Trump. US stock markets set new records in New York following the publication of the inflation data, as hopes rose that the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates in the...
