The federal government is preparing to give $6.88 billion for the construction of a second rail tunnel under the Hudson River to New York City. This will mark the biggest investment ever put into a mass-transit project. The investment is part of the infrastructure project Gateway. The new tunnel would offer an improved method of transportation, in comparison to the single-track tunnels that opened in 1910 and have since deteriorated. Though the pandemic has reduced the number of New Jersey commuters arriving at Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, travel has been increasing since 2020, and offic...

President Joe Biden has announced a $292 million grant in order to build a new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River, which would provide an additional route of travel between New York City and New Jersey. He spoke from the construction site itself and is seeking to provide a compromise between his economic vision and that of the GOP. The grant comes from the $1 billion bipartisan infrastructure bill passed last year. “This tunnel opened for business in 1910, 113 years ago,” Biden said. “And the structure is literally deteriorating. The roof is leaking, the floor is sinking. Plus, it was badly ...

The House voted Thursday night to temporarily reauthorize transportation funding, delaying the vote for the infrastructure bill that has been the center of a heated battle in Washington for the past few weeks. The decision came after progressives refused to vote for the bill until they were assured that a separate $1.75 trillion social spending measure would also be finalized and passed. Progressives want a commitment that Sens. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona) will vote in favor of the measure, a commitment that they have yet to give. The vote followed a visit to t...

Former President Donald Trump denounced the Senate’s vote to advance the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill on Saturday, calling it a “disgrace” and urging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) to keep pushing amendments. “Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill is a disgrace,” Trump wrote on the Save America PAC website. “If Mitch McConnell was smart, which we’ve seen no evidence of, he would use the debt ceiling card to negotiate a good infrastructure package.” Trump, who has been regularly releasing his message via Save America PAC, after he was banned from his social media pl...

On Saturday, President Joe Biden walked back his threat to veto a bipartisan infrastructure bill that costs $1.2 trillion. Biden had previously announced on Thursday he will veto the bill unless Congress passes a larger bill that includes separate Democratic priorities via budget reconciliation. “My comments also created the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent,” Biden said in a statement Saturday. The comment refers to his Thursday remarks following the announcement of the bipartisan infrastructure deal. “If this ...

President Joe Biden has agreed to a revised infrastructure bill crafted by a bipartisan group of 10 senators. The bill will increase federal spending to about $600 billion. The compromise bill focuses on new investments in roads, broadband internet and electric utilities. This bill is part of Biden’s $4 trillion economic proposals. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have yet to see the revisions and so the su...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–Kentucky) said at a press conference that he does not expect any Republican senators to support President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package. “I don’t think there will be any Republican support – none, zero – for the $4.1 trillion grab bag which has infrastructure in it but a whole lot of other stuff,” McConnell told reporters. “We’re open to doing a roughly $600 billion package which deals with what all of us agree is infrastructure… If it’s going to be about infrastructure, let’s make it about infrastructure.” The “$4.1 trillion grab bag” references ...
