Gold may not seem like the most exciting investment these days, but the precious metal could still deserve a place in your portfolio during these turbulent times, according to gold investor and analyst Simon Popple, the CEO of Brookville Capital. Gold is usually seen as an inflation hedge. This is because as inflation eats away at your Euros, the price of every ounce of gold also rises simultaneously in Euro terms, leaving you with a more valuable asset. In the past few months, several countries across the world have experienced high inflation, soaring interest rates and a rising cost of livin...

According to Hargreaves Lansdown's Savings and Resilience Barometer, it is estimated that 30% of 20 to 24-year-olds have "just in case" savings, and that figure rises to 53% for 25- to 29-year-olds. That's despite those in their 20s only having about £10 per month left of their income to put aside, while those aged between 25 and 29 have a disposable income of about £81 per month, Emma Wall, head of investment research and analysis at Hargreaves Lansdown, explained to Euronews. However, creating your financial blueprint can seem intimidating at a young age, but it can be done. Planning ahead f...

On a global scale, more than 100 private start-ups passed the $1 billion valuation mark last year, reaching so-called "unicorn" status. That term is given to a company that reaches such a valuation without being listed on the stock market. Of these new unicorns, roughly 20% were in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, compared with 50% in North America, and 30% in the Asia-Pacific area. While Europe has increased its unicorn quota over the last decade, the region still lags behind international counterparts - namely the US and China. "We must remember that the number of start-...

UBS has offered to repay former Credit Suisse customers funds that were invested in Greensill Capital, a firm that collapsed in 2021. $900 million (€840 million) has been set aside for the compensation, and investors will be able to recoup 90% of the value of their lost assets. The offer will remain open until the end of July. UBS has been working to mop up Credit Suisse's legacy since it acquired the lender one year ago. The collapse of the rival bank was largely brought on by the failure of supply chain financing firm Greensill Capital, which accounted for funds worth $10 billion (€9.3 billi...

Europe lacks the data centres to train artificial intelligence models that match the current demand, an official from French AI company MistralAI warned today (14 June). “We are reaching the capacity; we need to build datacentres and ensure there is enough electricity for the scale of AI development today. There is a huge amount of work to be done,” Audrey Herblin-Stoop, Head of Public Affairs at MistralAI said at a conference organised by the European Court of Auditors (ECA). MistralAI, which was founded a year ago, used supercomputer facilities opened by the European Commission to train its ...

Getting the right to live and work in another country can be a long and difficult process. But that’s not always the case for those with money to spend. Golden visas offer the opportunity for wealthy people to essentially ‘buy’ the right to residency - sometimes without even having to live in the country. And their popularity in the European Union is growing as people look to move away from political decisions such as Brexit that may limit their rights. With the unsettled political and social environment in the US in recent years, applications for golden visas from Americans were also projecte...

UK retail investors are increasingly looking at trading in companies listing on US stock markets because of the fall in appeal of the London stock market over the past 10 years, the CMC Markets' report into retail trading trends has said. In recent times, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) seems to have been having difficulty persuading firms to launch their initial public offerings (IPOs) on the exchange. In 2023, the LSE saw only 24 IPOs, the lowest amount since 1995. Not only that, but fast-growing companies in the UK are also being forced to be ever more dependent on foreign investors. EU Ele...

Energy ministers meeting in Brussels voted unanimously today (May 30) for the EU to officially withdraw the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) while leaving open the possibility for member states to remain in their own capacity. Deciding on the bloc's future in the ECT was one of the commitments of the EU Belgian Presidency, the country’s energy minister Tinne Van Der Straeten told reporters today shortly before joining her counterparts at the Energy Council. Today’s decision followed a European Parliament vote last month signalling an overwhelming intention to quit the treaty. The ECT is a post-Cold...

The European Commission needs to invest more in artificial intelligence if it wants to achieve its ambitions and be on a par with the US and China, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) said in a report published today (29 May). The auditors, responsible for vetting EU finances, said that despite developing AI regulation – which will formally enter into force next month – the Commission failed to coordinate with the individual member states on AI policy and to systematically monitor investment. “Going forward, stronger governance and more – and better targeted – public and private investment wi...
