The Israeli military on Sunday announced it would implement a “tactical pause” in its offensive in the southern Gaza Strip to allow aid to flow through. The army said the pause would begin in the Rafah area at 8 a.m and remain in effect until 7 p.m local time. It said the pauses would take place every day until further notice. The break is intended to allow aid trucks to reach the nearby Israel-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing, the main entry point for incoming aid, and travel safely to the Salah a-Din highway, a main north-south road, to deliver supplies to other parts of Gaza, the military s...

Thousands of people have staged a protest in Tel Aviv to demand the Israeli government do more to secure the release of the hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza. The weekly protests also have an anti-government element, with many demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu call fresh elections and make way for a successor. "I'm not ready to live in a world full of death. I am not ready to live in a country with a government that sends us to settle in the borders and fight in wars and in the end abandons us. I'm not ready to live without a father," said Ofer Kalderon, the son of Rotem Kal...

The troops were killed in an explosion, the army said, without elaborating. The deaths will likely fuel calls for a cease-fire and heighten Israeli public anger over ultra-Orthodox exemptions from the military. In January, 21 Israeli troops were kille in a single attack by Palestinian militants in Gaza. Last month, Israel’s Supreme Court ordered an end to government subsidies for many ultra-Orthodox men who don’t serve in the army. A new draft law hasn't been passed, but the coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week voted in favor of extending exemptions for religious men. Altho...

An official with the UN's food agency says he he believes a "water and sanitation catastrophe" is taking place in southern Gaza as the war between Hamas and Israel continues across the strip. Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme Carl Skau said the agency's main concern was in the south where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced from the city of Rafah. "Here we have really a protection disaster and a water and sanitation catastrophe. And, you know, people are camping on the streets, on the beach, at best with some piece of shelter. But, you know, we were dr...

As talks of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas loom in the air, Washington does not expect an agreement in the near future due to the fact that a globally supported US-backed proposal has not been fully embraced by either side. But speaking at the G7 summit in Italy, where current world conflicts are the main topic, US President Joe Biden told reports that he "hadn't lost hope". As Israeli bombing continued in the Gaza strip, this week Hamas proposed modifications to a US-backed peace proposal aimed at ensuring a permanent cease-fire and the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. ...

Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a boat-borne bomb attack against a commercial ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday, authorities said, marking another escalation in the face of a US-led campaign trying to protect the vital waterway. Yemen's military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying the vessel targeted as the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier Tutor. He described the attack as using a "drone boat," as well as drones and ballistic missiles. In a warning to shippers, the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centr...

Hamas says it has responded to a US-backed proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza — albeit with some “amendments” to the deal — and that its priority is to bring a “complete stop” to the eight-month war that has killed more than 37,000 people. The foreign ministries of Qatar and Egypt, who have been key mediators alongside the US, confirmed that they had received Hamas’ response and said mediators were studying it. “We’re in receipt of this reply that Hamas delivered to Qatar and to Egypt, and we are evaluating it right now,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters in Washi...

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said it is crucial for the international community to add "more pressure" on the Israeli government to bring the war in Gaza to an end "once and for all". Sánchez added that the Southern Europe joined the South African government-sponsored case of bringing Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In January, the court ordered Israel to take measures to prevent any acts of genocide in Gaza. "It is obviously not up to me to say whether or not it is genocide, but in any case I can assure you that I have serious doubts the Netanyahu government is...

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has just announced that it will stick with its sponsorship deal with Baillie Gifford, after an internal review over the company’s links to Israel and fossil fuels. Fringe CEO Shona McCarthy has said that among the “fevered environment” festivals exist in, the board voted “overwhelmingly” in support of maintaining the partnership. Baillie Gifford is a Scottish investment firm that entered the public eye in August last year when over 50 authors threatened to boycott the Edinburgh Book Festival over its investments in corporations that profit from fossil fuels. More ...
