Journey has always maintained a rugged tour schedule, extensively touring even when there wasn’t a new studio album to promote. Yet, oddly enough, this history of road work has not always been well-documented. For instance, there’s only one official live recording to chronicle the time on the road supporting their first six studio LPs. Another one wouldn’t arrive for decades. Without much of a backlog of albums to survey, a comprehensive countdown of Journey live projects simply has to take in their concert films, as well. That makes room for Journey 2001, the only live release from Steve Auge...

Steve Perry appears on an update of “It Could Have Been You” from Journey‘s Raised on Radio by a new band called the Effect. Listen below. The Effect features a pair of sons of famous rock stars: producer/guitarist Trev Lukather’s father is Steve Lukather of Toto, and drummer Nic Collins’ dad is Phil Collins of Genesis. (The younger Lukather is also Perry’s former bandmate Jonathan Cain‘s son-in-law.) “Steve and I go way back,” Lukather said on Instagram. “Other than my Pop, Steve Perry has been a mentor to me. When he heard the Effect, he called me and expressed how much he really loved what ...

Ryan Gosling‘s upcoming Fall Guy film is apparently going to feature a jukebox of classic rock songs. Preview material has already included AC/DC, Journey, Bon Jovi, Phil Collins and now Kiss. In the movie, Gosling revives stuntman Colt Seavers from ‘80s-era TV show opposite fellow Oscar nominee Emily Blunt, who plays his ex Jody Moreno. Yungblud released his cover of “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” today ahead of the May 3 release of the film and soundtrack. Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” was featured in the initial trailer, followed by Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” in the second preview...

Ross Valory‘s aptly titled solo debut All of the Above returns Journey‘s original bassist to his rangy ’70s-era roots. Genres once again serve as mere speed bumps on a free-wheeling instrumental ride that very much connects with Journey’s self-titled debut and their often-overlooked soundtrack work on Dream After Dream. The album was produced by Valory and co-produced by Night Ranger‘s Eric Levy and Jacob Stowe, with musical contributions from former bandmate Steve Smith, Greg Errico of Sly and the Family Stone, current members of Santana, Neal Schon‘s son Miles, and Tubes co-founder Prairie P...

Journey‘s Greatest Hits album has reached a rare plateau by notching its 800th week on the Billboard 200. Only two other acts, Pink Floyd and then Bob Marley, have ever achieved this feat. Dark Side of the Moon got there in 2012, while Marley’s Legend hit 800 weeks just last September. Journey’s Greatest Hits made its Billboard 200 debut back on Dec. 3, 1988, boasting a pair of Top 5 hits, four Top 10 hits, and three Top 20 hits — along with lower-charting must-have favorites like “Lights,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Send Her My Love” and “Wheel in the Sky.” The LP peaked at No. 10 on Feb. 11, 19...

Journey managed to release one of the most talked-about clips in MTV history during their brief time making videos. As you’ll see below in our ranking of every Journey music video, however, there were plenty of other high and low points beyond the ubiquitous “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” Because of their relatively small video catalog, we’ve expanded the rankings to include closely related clips from Steve Perry, Bad English (which included three members of Journey’s current lineup), Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon. That serves to provide a broader overview of their career arc from the ’70s throu...

For fans from their radio-ready zenith, there simply can be no Journey without Steve Perry. Yet the truth of the matter is, Journey was started without him – and the band has continued in the same way since his departure in 1998. In fact, Perry has been gone for far longer than he ever was actually in Journey, a stint that began with 1978’s Infinity. More than a half dozen others have fronted Journey songs along the way. Of course, the decade that followed Perry’s arrival would see the group reign supreme on the charts, making his association with Journey complete. They’d never had a gold reco...

Journey had never gotten higher than No. 85 on the Billboard album chart when new frontman Steve Perry walked in the door in 1977. They went on to sell an astonishing nine million albums in the U.S. alone before Jonathan Cain joined in 1980, and Journey somehow got even bigger. Their next four albums were all Top 5 smashes, and they were all platinum or multi-platinum. Perry’s first record with Cain sold more than 10 million copies. Journey had also never had a charting single before Perry arrived. By the time he split with the group in the late ’90s, they’d racked up 16 Top 25 singles – inclu...

Original bassist Ross Valory has had time to put his ugly split with Journey into perspective. “What an amazing experience,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I am so blessed to have spent the better part of 50 years in a band that’s remarkable. All the fine players and singers that have come through the room that I had the privilege of performing with, including the current players. These are all brilliant, talented people, whether they are present in the band or not.” Valory initially met Herbie Herbert when the future Journey mastermind was working as a manager of the Bay Area psych-rock band Frumio...
