Washington (AFP) - An American man was executed Wednesday in Texas for the 2001 murder of a woman. In 2006, Ramiro Gonzales was convicted and sentenced to death for the rape and murder of Bridget Townsend when they both were 18 years old. Gonzales, now 41, was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. local time (23:50 GMT). He was executed via lethal injection. "To the Townsend family, I’m sorry I can’t articulate, I can’t put into words the pain I have caused y’all, the hurt, what I took away that I cannot give back," Gonzales said in his final statement. Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court is set to allow abortions for women experiencing medical emergencies in Idaho, according to a copy of a verdict briefly posted on its website and seen by Bloomberg News on Wednesday. The court's apparent decision comes two years after the conservative-majority bench overturned the nationwide right to terminate a pregnancy, making reproductive rights a pivotal issue that could affect the outcome of the November presidential election. The ruling -- which Bloomberg posted in full, but is not necessarily the final version -- would reinstate a lower court's...

Anti-Hernandez protesters gathered outside the Manhattan courthouse ahead of sentencing brandishing placards decrying the former head of state's crimes. The sentence, which also included an $8 million fine, was less than the life imprisonment that prosecutors had sought -- although Hernandez's age, 55, means he may die behind bars. Hernandez, who US federal prosecutors said tu...

The Kremlin described the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Russia's former defence minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, the current military chief of staff, as "quite absurd." "We do not recognize the court's jurisdiction and are not a member of the relevant statute. Accordingly, we also do not recognize the arrest warrants," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. The orders are as silly as the previous arrest warrants against President Vladimir Putin and Russia's commissioner for children's ...

The timing -- and location -- of the plea deal seemed to have come out of nowhere. But an agreement between Assange, an Australian citizen who leaked US national security secrets in 2010, and American prosecutors had been moving forward in earnest for months. When did discussions around a deal start?Assange leaked the documents and was investigated during th...

New York (AFP) - A judge eased a gag order on Tuesday that was imposed on Donald Trump during his criminal trial which saw him convicted of 34 counts, according to a court filing. Judge Juan Merchan imposed the limited gag order ahead of the trial, restricting Trump from commenting publicly on jurors, witnesses, prosecutors and court staff, later expanding it to include his own family and that of the prosecutor. Merchan, who will sentence the presidential hopeful on July 11, said that "circumstances have now changed. The trial portion of these proceedings ended when the verdict was rendered, a...
