New York (AFP) - Donald Trump's defense lawyers rested their case Tuesday -- without the former president following through on a vow to testify -- as the judge planned jury deliberations in the historic criminal trial for early next week. After approximately five weeks, 19 witnesses, reams of documents and sometimes salacious testimony, judgment day in the first ever trial of a former US president was drawing closer. New York law means the trial has not been shown on television and experts are divided on whether the airing of Trump's dirty laundry is having much of a political impact. However,...

New York (AFP) - After approximately five weeks, 19 witnesses, reams of documents and a dash of salacious testimony, the prosecution against Donald Trump rested its case Monday, handing over to the defense before closing arguments expected next week. Trump's team immediately sought to undermine key testimony against the former president, who is accused of covering up hush money paid to a porn star over an alleged encounter that could have derailed his successful 2016 White House bid. His attorneys called lawyer Robert Costello -- who once advised star prosecution witness Michael Cohen before f...

New York (AFP) - Donald Trump's New York criminal trial briefly descended into chaos Monday when the judge became infuriated by a defense witness's behavior and pandemonium broke out between journalists and court officers. Lawyer Robert Costello, called up to testify by Trump's team, exasperated normally unflappable Judge Juan Merchan by constantly griping at his rulings. Each time Merchan upheld a challenge from prosecutors to his statements on the stand, Costello would shake his head or sigh theatrically. When Costello responded to another objection being upheld with an audible "Jeez!", Merc...

Washington (AFP) - A 23-year-old man from Taiwan has been arrested on charges of selling tens of millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs online through a site on the dark web known as the "Incognito Market." Rui-Siang Lin, also known as "Pharoah," was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York on Saturday and was to appear in court on Monday, the Justice Department said. "As alleged, Rui-Siang Lin was the architect of Incognito, a $100 million dark web scheme to traffic deadly drugs to the United States and around the world," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. Incogn...

The Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said that he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders - Yehia Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh - are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel. Khan's request for warrants will now proceed to one of the International Criminal Court's (ICC) pre-trial chambers for consideration by a panel of three judges. Currently, the chamber comprises judges from Romania, Benin, and Mexico. If issued, the warrants would significantly restrict the ability of the ind...

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal by a Canadian former Guantanamo detainee of his convictions for war crimes committed in Afghanistan. Toronto-born Omar Khadr was 15 years old when he was captured on an Afghan battlefield in 2002 and sent to the US military prison in Cuba. Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to murdering a US soldier in violation of the laws of war, attempted murder, conspiracy, providing material support for terrorism and spying. He was sentenced to eight years in prison but was sent home to Canada in 2012 to serve the remainder of his sentence. Kh...

New York (AFP) - Donald Trump's trial on criminal charges of covering up hush money payments to a porn star to protect his 2016 election campaign could go to the jury next week. Judge Juan Merchan said Monday that "issues" that cropped up over the weekend made it "apparent that we are not going to be able to sum up tomorrow" as he had hoped. He said the goal would now be "finishing up everything this week... so we can have summations first thing next week." The defense is expected to finish its cross-examination of star witness Michael Cohen on Monday, after which the prosecution has said it w...

South Africa's highest court ruled on Monday that former president Jacob Zuma cannot stand as a candidate in next week's general election on the grounds that a 2021 conviction for contempt of court has disqualified him. The Constitutional Court ruled that Zuma's sentence of more than 12 months in prison had made him ineligible to stand. His former party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), suspended Zuma, 82, in January. He has since founded a new party, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and intended to stand as chairman of the party in the May 29 elections. The Constitutional Court ruling revers...
