On Wednesday June 12, USA Volleyball announced its collegiate team to train alongside the USA Olympic Women’s team. On that roster was none other than Kentucky’s Megan Wilson. The 19-player roster features some of the best college volleyball players around the country. Practicing with Wilson includes Lauren Briseño from Baylor, Ifenna Cos-Okpalla from Texas A&M, Phekran Kong from Louisville, and Lydia Martyn from Wilson’s former school, the University of Oklahoma. The University of Kentucky volleyball team has released its full non-conference schedule for this upcoming 2024 season. Five out of the 11 opponents finished last season in the Top 25, including No. 2 Nebraska, No. 22 Western Kentucky University, No. 12 Penn State, No. 6 Louisville, and No. 5 Stanford. More Kentucky Blue is getting into Team USA. Former Kentucky volleyball star Avery Skinner was named to the United States Volleyball National Team on Wednesday. She’ll represent both her country and the Cats at the Summer Olympics in Paris. Skinner played for Kentucky from 2017-21 before finishing her college career at Baylor. The outside hitter from Katy, Texas helped the Cats win four straight SEC Championships and, of course, the national championship in 2020. In 2021, Skinner added to that legacy, moving on to Baylor’s green and gold for her graduate season. The American Volleyball Coaches Association First Serve Showcase is set for the 2024 season. It will be held on August 27 in Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center and feature some of the nation’s top volleyball programs, including Kentucky, Nebraska, Louisville, and Wisconsin. The two-match event will look like a double header of sorts, where Kentucky and Nebraska’s first serve is set at 7 P.M. and Wisconsin and Louisville will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the UK/NU match. Just days after the Atlanta Dream wished Leah Edmond and the Atlanta Vibe good luck in the Pro Volleyball Federation semifinals, Edmond showed her support for fellow UK legend Rhyne Howard. With the $82 million renovation to Memorial Coliseum almost complete, the Kentucky women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, and STUNT teams all had to find a new home last season. With the project being targeted to be finished prior to this fall, each of those programs should be able to move back into its usual home gym for the 2024-25 season.
